Ive found money like this numerous times. You keep it, unless you saw the person drop it.

When in Vegas over winter break, there was an old lady who had a 20 dollar bill sitting by her foot, which I told her about just before shoe got up to leave from her slot machine. I could have played dumb, waited, and gotten the money myself, but I didnt.

Basically return it if there is any indicator of the owner at all (through seeing them dropping it, ID in a wallet or whatever), otherwise pocketing it would be the only other thing I could really do with it.

Either that or leave it on the ground for someone else to pick up without a second thought actually, but as a broke ass student who's paying too much in terms of rent I couldn't afford that option.

Keep it. Unless it's on the floor of my house or a house of someone I know. I don't get lucky enough for stuff like this, so it doesn't matter much. If it were to hypothetically fall from someone I wasn't well acquainted with, it really depends on the person. What I mean is, if there's some thugnificent looking dude with a durag, no shirt, and pants down to his ankles, and I see $200 drop from the pockets of hits pants that are dragging on the floor, I really wouldn't mind pocketing it.

But if it was an old man or something walking with his walker and having the wind blow cash from his pocket onto the floor without him knowing, I'd probably tap him to return it; while at the same time having my negative side eating away at the back of my head for not keeping it and staying quiet, and it'll bother me for a long time, kinda like the opposite of guilt.

Is there a word for that? Nothing's coming to mind right now. I'll look it up. If not, there should be, because I feel that a lot if I ever decide do a good deed that costs me an opportunity for potential self gain. I'll call it selfish-guilt for now. Rather than robbing the old man of the $200 and feeling bad about it, I robbed myself the opportunity to rob the man of $200 and feel guilty for robbing myself. I wouldn't call it regret, because regret feeds into this feeling, it's something larger.

This is what I'd think, but I'm pessimistic so don't know if many other people think this way. If I lose something (which happens a lot) I assume I'll never get it back, unless it's lost in my house. If it's in my house, then I tend to find it months later when I'm not even looking for it and don't need it anymore.

I've actually had that happen before. Myself and another co-worker of mine found about $8,000 underneath a table at the restaurant we worked at. We remembered the guy who was sitting there but didn't know his name or anything else about him. He came back a little later and inquired about it. We had tucked it away in the safe in the office. We gave it back to him and he gave us each $100. Karma is great!

How do you even leave that much money behind? No seriously, how? I don't even know what you would carry $8,000 in cash around with you anyway unless you were doing some shady transaction. I honestly would have kept it, but I'd imagine doing that is hard when someone else witnessed its existance as well.

LOL, not really. It was rolled up tight and wrapped with a thick rubber band. Obviously this guy had been at one of the casinos here in Vegas and got lucky LOL.

And then decided to test their luck again by not directly depositing that money and keeping it somewhere that it can fall. I'm not the kind of person that can lecture about keeping important things in places where they won't get lost (I lose things all the time actually, and my bad memory doesn't help since it makes it hard to retrace my steps and think of possible places they could have been lost).

Guess you don't think as clearly sometimes as you'd want to, his best bet would have been to deposit the money as soon as possible. If I ever go outside, I never carry more than $100 in cash on me (if I carry any at all). There's no reason to carry so much money around. If I were to get lucky at a casino and win big, the first thing I'm going to do is deposit the money. Or I'd leave it somewhere safe until I can deposit it, if there's no bank around for me to do so. Even putting it somewhere like your car is fine, so long as you make sure nobody sees you with the cash and sees you putting it into your car.

But I guess the dude was too hungry after a long day of gambling to think right. He really got a lucky break dropping it in a restaurant instead of on the floor anywhere else.

Yeah, pretty much. I asked my friends what they'd do, and all I got was "OMG RETURN IT TO IT'S RIGHTFUL OWNER" bs. Except that I don't know the owner, and I'd be giving it to a group of anonymous Customer Service people I do not trust. The most I'd do is either donate to charities, or give it to the Police. I don't even trust the coppers though, so charity > everything else at this point. I actually found 270 USD.

I would be more inclined on giving the money back to the old guy, because older people are usually less aware of their surroundings and/or actions. Not to say that I 100% would for sure.

Yeah, I'd never turn in cash to the police. What'd most likely happen is they'd keep it for their selves. I can't trust law enforcement too much. Under their uniforms they're just normal humans with filthy desires like everyone else.
