I've never really understood why some people say MoN is better for some classes and HTP is better for others.
Which would benefit me more as a Mechanic?

MoN is better unless you can afford a good potential on an HTP or cHTP.

MoN is better for some classes because of the 10 attack an average MoN adds. Some classes get more out of weapon attack than others because of their skills having high % damage rates. HTPs are good for other classes that could benefit more from having +23 to their primary and secondary stats (I believe that mages were the only ones that fit this category, but that was pre-BB), or if they require the extra stat bonus to equip a weapon that would give more than a 9-12 attack increase. Also, I don't think MoNs can ever be given potential, which means that a HTP with potential can become better than a MoN even if you're of a class that benefits more from attack.
Now, as for which one you want, I'd say you might want a MoN since mechs have enormous damage percentages from their skills, but as ,Shidoshi has already stated, you'll be better off with a HTP if you can afford one with good potential stats.

I don't know how it is in Windia, but here in Kradia, a 3-lined HTP costs about ten times as much as a MoN. And then you have to cube it. Probably need at least 9% dex on it before it can give you the same damage boost as a MoN.
So, I would say, if you're not rich, get a MoN first thing. Then keep an eye out for an opportunity to get a 3-lined HTP (either by buying in FM or by going on a run, once the glitch is resolved), because, as people above me have said, once you get it cubed to Unique and a good chunk of DEX, it will be better than the MoN. Not much point buying a 2-lined HTP and wasting cubes on it, because you'll eventually want 3 lines anyway.

MoNs are better for their costs. C/HTPs are normally too expensive for the common mapler to have, let alone cube to hell.
If we had MSEA's version of the MoN, there would be no question of which was better.
