So my little old mac book crashed and when i tried to start it again i got the folder with the question mark flashing indicating that it couldn't find the system files, so i was like yeah k w/e i'll just find buy the install disk. well when i got home i thought well may as well put Ubuntu on it so i can do something...so i put the boot disk in with a fresh download (10.4 or something) and it dosnt pick it up so im like k w/e mac is being a papaya so i power off then on hold option+command+shift+del as all mac users know this picks up any disks ect any ways i hear it spinning away and nothing happens disk stops spinning so i says to myself hmm strange - and i power off and on again and hold c now this should work since it makes what ever is in the disk drive run, well no luck with that either so im like fuuuuuuu hard drive is fucked. now before i go and buy a brand new Mac book pro (I know new hard drive but i need an upgrade any ways its like 3 years old.) is there ANYTHING else i can try is there like a spinrite for mac?

When did you buy your mac?
The same thing happened to mine, flashing question mark folder on the screen. Hard drive repairs can cost a lot, however, if you bought your mac sometime around Christmas 2007 you can get a free fix for it. It was something about a faulty drive.
Good luck getting it fixed. I know it sucks to have that happen.

There are thousands of internet enabled devices that would allow anyone to post a topic on Southperry.
Spending time guessing which device you have yet to brick is just as useful as guessing which grade school teacher clearly didn't think to c()ckslap you upside the head for your run-on sentences.

Im not saying to do this....
Ive only ever had 1 hard drive related problem, and it was with my old pos 30gb b/w ipod. The hard drive wouldnt spin, i would get a sad ipod face and whatnot. Surprisingly enough, the solution to it was to take the HD out of the ipod and shake the living piss out of it.
Your problem sounds like the discs are...off their rocker somehow. pineapple if i know what to do.

One solution, get a Boot Disk that has hardware checking tools and have it check the whole system. Hiren's Boot CD would be a good place to start.

Abusing a hard drive such as shaking it is ill-advised. The read-write head(s) could scratch the disk platter(s) and then you are really out of luck when the hard drive crashes.
