From my own perspective, as well as past experiences of owning an HP. No. I'm probably biased though.
I've always spoken with several other people that majored in IT, and a lot of people have told me about how Lenovos are actually pretty decent. Mostly because the specs are adequate, and you can actually sell Lenovos back to people and actually get something out of it (cash). HPs, I'm against because based on my own personal experiences with them, they have crappy customer service as well as the fact that their hardware isn't exactly all that great. Lenovo is just something better if you're more business oriented, I even noticed that on most of the Lenovo designs, they look very clean and well-made. It's a decent buy if you intend on keeping it to either look professional, or to sell it back to other people. I read the specs on both, and the Lenovo can be upgraded to a max of 8 GB. There was nothing on the HP laptop, so I'm not too sure about that one. This can be a great option if you intend on upgrading memory, if not, it's not something you should be overly concerned with. Both seems to have very similar specs, so it's really hard for me to just give an exact opinion on which I think is the better option for you. For me, I'd probably pick Lenovo. only because the upgradable mem is something I do like with it. In regards to the OS, you can always change that. There ...are ways. But let's not get into that.

XTOTHEL Wrote:harder better faster stronger HNNNNNNNG- @ that Intel Core i3 For that price, with those kinda specs, definitely worth it. This > the other two. Also has upgradable mem (to 8, from 4), 8 hours battery life, etc etc etc. HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG-

XTOTHEL Wrote:harder better faster stronger you're recommending a laptop with integrated INTEL graphics? What garbage. If you're going to go with integrated, grab a Fusion laptop/netbook. It destroys the competition in 3DMark06, and has DX11 support. Intel doesn't take graphics seriously. HP is also garbage. 25% fault rate with their hardware. Terrible customer service. Long wait times. Not worth the hassle.

XTOTHEL Wrote:harder better faster stronger After taxes it's over my budget. And I don't like Intel stuff at all. I've had more hardware failures with Intel based systems than any other after only a year of usage. I bought a Dell XPS with an Intel Core Duo about 2 years ago and all Intel chipset minus the GeForce graphics... motherboard burned out in 6 months.... so no. Toshiba is a no-no as well due to the fact if you want any customer service, even under warranty, you have to pay for it. I can't get a Fusion either. As stated I need a work horse of a laptop and a netbook level laptop won't cover it. Nice hardware specs for the systems powered by them, but not enough to meet my needs. The only reason I'm not leaning to the Lenovo is I have to connect to a Network.

Taxes? For a laptop? That's why you pick either newegg or amazon.....if you live in Cali, grab your laptops from Amazon. No tax and usually better pricing, and usually free shipping.
If you want a workhorse for a laptop, then your budget for $600 is too low. Only better CPU and GPU cause the prices to inflate so much. At $600 your best bet is to wait for a laptop model to go on sale or go with Intel graphics, which is sub par at best. After Fusion's introduction into the notebook arena, those prices will plummet since the Fusion GPU/CPU combo really put a dent on Intel's domination in the laptop arena. Took AMD long enough. At $700-900 you'd be choosing among entry level discrete GPUs.... for example this Acer http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AS5745G-7671-...B0041RSEVA NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M 2.4 GHz Intel Core i3-370M dual-core processor btw Toshiba has among the lowest hardware failure rates in the business. Yes their customer service sucks, but all probability tells that you'll never have to deal with them. I have a Toshiba Satellite with GT230M (basically a repackaged 9800GT) GPU and dual core 2.2Ghz since 2 years ago. Never had anything mess up!

I did see this one of Newegg as well...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6834114930 Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5057 Nearly the same hardware, price range is perfect, except the different CPU model (no biggie), but again Windows 7 Home Premium x64, and I don't want to shell out more money for a Windows 7 Professional x64 disk and license, unless I could get a recovery DVD with Windows 7 Professional for this model of laptop for cheap. I have heard good reports on the longevity of Toshiba computers, but the coupling of bad customer service was what turned me off.

Most of the PC/laptop manufacturers don't really have good customer service. Asus isn't bad at all. But they are a good exception rather than the rule.
That laptop is good, but I don't know if you want to wait till Bulldozer.

It's the laptop I'm typing this message out to you on, that I've had since I was 16 years old (am 21 now), and the only time it's ever stopped working is when I pried open the case and borked the monitor (yet, the actual CPU still worked fine! It was more or less akin to working blind). Don't know about bad customer service as I've not once needed to contact customer support for any reason.

Well, I kinda need it within the next three weeks really and the Network Connectivity issue is a major issue currently. Because I am the IT administrator for a local company where I live I also have to use this same laptop for network accounts as well so having a client system that is network operating system functional is a necessity. As I said, I really don't have the money for a Windows 7 Professional disk pack so I was going with the HP ProBook originally as it come with Windows 7 Professional by default.

weird, that "local company" isn't providing the equipment and they allow personal computers on the network.

Actually, it's not totally mine, though it will be mine after I sign it off as a business expense related to my job. It's budgeted through the corporate funding and they gave me a budget of $650 for a new mobile workstation (that's actually what was left from a year of upgrading servers and other workstations minus 25 dollars we used for a large 5 topping pizza New Years Eve). It's either spend my own money to replace a PC I salvaged for my job, or have the company buy it for me on a budget and write it off.
2011-01-07, 03:54 AM
I would use that $650 to pad more goodies on a laptop, and toss in three or four hundred bucks just to nicely soup it up.
2011-01-07, 03:57 AM
also........how LITTLE are they paying you? =/ I smell an IT admin not being paid enough.

You know, you're a sweet girl for being so open and honest. I love that about people.
hmm it's 2:30am... i need to sleep, cardio when i wake up. Grab that AMD chipset mobo!!! best of luck

Jamie_Kurosawa Wrote:Economy is down... 25k SALARY? Dunno if I'd want that. One of my friends currently makes around 50k a year, also salary. If he gets called-in to work, he works, simple as that. He works for: UPMC. I make around 10k-13k a year, and this is in retail. 25k with salary is kinda rough on you, I'd say. But that's just my perspective. Also, how far did you get in college? Curious. Economy is down, so even if you got a 4 year degree or higher, it'd be hard to find a job that pays ...relatively well. Based on a lot of my friends that are working right now, they told me to just stay in school and try to finish what I can, then go out later.
