MUST. HAVE.
I have a question to ask you fellow MineCraft players. How did you do the layout for your mine? Considering that I have only played for several days, I just mine like:
But going lower and lower, I do this every time I reach 6 blocks forward or so, sometimes 8. I've also recently heard of MINECARTS but do not know how to use them efficiently.. or how to even re-set up my mine for it now. -_-;;;;

and it piers off to the left ever other 10 block(s)+
and I strip mine in one direction. either left or right.
I also go down till I hit cobble stone.

...mines? I just dig tunnels and hope i find a natural cave.
then i just explore it. use redstone dust/torches to mark pathways when I feel I've explored it enough.

I dig down 10x10 and then hope for natural caves and i also make tunnels every 10-20 blocks.
Using minecarts to get down and water lift to get up.

I make minecart tracks to my overworld mine entrances, and then proceed downward.

2x1(X and Z) tunnel straight down placing ladders to get out. When Y=13, dig a 2x1 (Y and Z or X) in any direction. Do not stop until more supplies are needed or I feel uncomfortable carrying my loot.
You could have the tunnel go 100 or so blocks, and then turn and end up making a giant square, but that requires more coordination. If I ever branch off of that original tunnel, I do with three blocks between each branch. All of these tunnels at Y=13.
Diamonds generate below Y=16. Lava generates below Y=64, but it is rather rare above Y=13 or so. Y=13 is the surface of most of the giant pools of lava deep in the ground, so you should be safe if you pay attention.

The way i've been doing it lately is digging around in a set rectangle from the surface world, and keep on passing down another level every time until I hit bedrock.

Dig 9x9x4 area, then dig down vertically 5 blocks.(Use ladders to come back up)
Repeat
???
Proffit.
This however may be dangerous, you may randomly find lava, and we all know how much you hate it.

I've heard of people using minecarts to go down, AND up. I should look more into this. I still don't have enough Iron to bother building tracks. >:

Down is pretty straight forward. Boosters let you go up very easily. AlmtyBob can help you.

I don't see why, theyre infinitely more useful than those coal powered-carts.

Do this and you will be swiming in ore.
Get about two 64's of logs and convert them to sticks. Make a H with all the sticks you get, that should be well over 30 ladders. With your ladders dig a 2x1 hole straight down. If you dig this way, in the event you find a natural cave you want fall in it as long as you aren't digging under your feet like a dumbass. Dig all the way down until you hit bedrock. Once at bedrock go up about 8-12 blocks up and set up base.
The reason you dig in that level is because that's where diamond spawns frequently and all other ores are easiy obtainable as well.

I actually don't dig tunnels that much, I just have a few rooms two to three blocks beneath the surface. When I dig down I usually keep it 1x1x5, I just make siderooms to it if I find something interesting. I usually ignore natural caves, mine tend to link into one huge cave anyways.
Never naturally bumped into a treasure room, however.

I go down to level 12 (12 up from bedrock) and dig horizontal branch mines. Best way to find diamond, redstone, and some gold. For iron and coal, I go spelunking.
Oh, and a nice way to go spelunking? Dig stairs down until you find a cave. You may not find a cave the first time, but you will eventually. Usually I have really good luck with this method, as it hits deeper caves which hold more goodies.

Also after a while when you have a full diamond set and your entire compound is illuminated the game becomes creative mode. I suggest playing with mods that can add more variety.

I have my own little game mode going on and out of boredom it even has it's own narrative.

Interesting...
What mods are you guys using too? A friend of mine, the server that I'm in now, he's using this mod specifically for HopStops. No need to bother with railroads. Thank God!

We're pretty much using that like some form of Instant Transmission, but with 9 blocks (platform). It's not too much of a pain, even if creating one of those = -50 Redstone Dusts. Redstone is easy to find though, IMO. I find about 500 a day, but I play around 8-10 hours.. so.. lol..
Picture of a HopStop:
Basically, make two. One from base above surface or on surface, and one near or at bedrock level. Done. I'll gladly take pictures if anybody needs some just to see what it's like.

Bumpin', cause I can.
Also, what's everybody's favorite texture packs so far? I'm really enjoying Mixcraft right now. I love the sun & moon.
