Kill Stealing
#1
Kill Stealing. It is fun, it is competitive, but at the same time it is against the ToS and unliked by the people being ksed. However after meeting a hermit today at STDs it made me reconsider the definition of stealing a kill. The sin was rude and inconsiderate of my opinion but brought up an important point. Since I was a dit training on STDs, I can only kill the things close to me and I can only kill one monster at a time, while the hermit had avenger, and the hermit can kill a wide ranged mob of six. Both of us OHKO the STDs 100% of the time, but he thinks that he is justified in his actions and that he is not kill stealing because-

*anything that is alive has not been attacked
*anything that I have not attacked is not my kill

Although the map is large and I could share it with another melee character, I would not be able to share in the described because the hermit can go through 75% or more of the map in 5 seconds while I can only go through 25% of the map in 5 seconds.

I am here to question several things about kill stealing because I do not know the answers myself.

*What is Nexon's definition of kill stealing?
If we establish the answer to that then we can eliminate our fears of being banned because we stole a kill

*What protocols apply when ranged and melee are trying to compete for a map?
Many warriors and non-fourth job dits often find themselves in these situations, so if we find out the rules for that we can establish a more friendlier approach to situations in hoodoos/voodoos and the like. The size of the map as well as the killing rate must be considered.

*What actions define a kill stealing situation in a public boss?
If we can figure out who presides over the boss in situations such Manu, Mushmom, or Pianus, then we can settle the debates of low levels arguing over high levels on who kills what.

*What constitutes as looting?
Although not kill stealing, it is a problem, there has been a number of situations where a scroll or a valuable item dropped and because of lack of space players argue over who gets what. I also hope to seek answers in bosses such as Pianus where drops are FFA and a number of players have participated in the fight, and they were not in the same party.

With that said I intend to make a guide of the responses to the thread so that people can settle such conflicts. I realize that the Global Maplestory community is certainly not the best, but if we could tackle this issue we can be a step closer to be a community that is nicer like supposedly that of KMS or JMS.

UPDATE 1
Seems to me that most repliers are in agreement with the fact that if someone comes in a map and starts killing stuff without your permission they are kill stealing. However it still leaves uncertainty with large public maps such as HHG1

I'm not sure of Nexon's definition of "Kill Stealing", but for the majority of the players, it'd be something very close to:

"I'm in this map first, I got here, if you are killing anything in this map without my consent, it is considered as Kill Stealing."

>_>;

Once people learn to share, it should make things easier for the rest of us, eh? Also, Nexon does things their way, they might be able to 'bend' the rules a bit seeing as how they made their own ToS, I would think? As tough as Nexon acts, there are still KS wars at Newties (and pretty daily) in Scania, I've witnessed them, I've been IN them, etc.

This would be close to Nexon's definition as well. I actually got someone temp-banned at STDs because they insisted on KSing and wouldn't leave after being asked, so that only reinforces it.

As for bosses; they're free-for-all, and they always will be.

Which is why I want to make the guide for the definition of kill-stealing, to prevent people from being banned.

Offtopic: Hothead Why do so many people like Shawn Johnson now? I thought you were GMSInfighter for a second there.

On topic: Well, technically, it is not kill stealing. However, it still probably is illegal.

Then again, both of you guys could of shared.

go through 75% or more of the map in 5 seconds while I can only go through 25% of the map in 5 seconds. Great. He gets 75% of the map while you get 25%, I'm pretty sure a new mass of STDs will spawn every five seconds.

Plus, what the heck is a hermit with a 1hko avenger doing at STDs? Sheesh...

I do not know what he was doing there but as I mentioned, he was rude and inconsiderate. We could have shared the map but he just followed me around spamming L7 and avenger. I want to make a guide on how to avoid and settle such conflicts.

In a sense, t's not your avatar anymore.

On topic: It doesn't matter what the hermit says, if he follows you around and kills stuff that you were about to hit, it's killstealing.

Ah, must have skipped over that part. Sorry :3.

I suppose it is kill stealing, after all, he stole the kill you were about to get. Lol.

We should really start a Shawn Johnson fan club, they'll be four of us in it.

The general rule for ksing is that if you're the first one in the map, the map's yours. However, exceptions should include people who either aren't using the map effectively or have alternative maps on which they can train but choose to train in a crowded map instead. Examples include people hitting only that one newtie at dangerous nest or F/Ps taking the bigger skelegon map to themselves. These are more extreme examples because high-levels really have no other training options. Also, for low-levels, if it's taking you 4-5 hits to kill a single hoodoo or voodoo, you probably really shouldn't be there, and someone more deserving of the map is justified to ks you out.

Bosses are different though. If you're actively killing a public boss, and someone walks in on you, he/she has no right to ks you. However, if you're standing in a map waiting for something to spawn and someone comes in, you don't have a right to claim ownership on something that hasn't spawned yet, such as area bosses, mushmom, etc. This isn't really much of a problem at manon, griffey, pianus, and other high-leveled spawning bosses because they can't be killed in 1-2 hits by 4th jobbers like the low-leveled bosses, and they take a while to spawn. Again, ksing is not justified while walking in on someone fighting a boss, no matter how dreadfully slow he/she is killing it.

I KSed some slut at Himes today until she gave back the Apple she stole from me a couple hours before. It felt good. Does this make me a KSing papaya?

If the NL was on the map when it spawned, then the ksing is justified, but if not, it isn't.

Killing monsters in a map that someone is actively training in is KSing. Bosses/GM event monsters are for everyone to kill, and those that aren't meant to be have doors that close behind them or some way of blocking other people from coming in to kill with you. If the spawn times were instantaneous it might be different, but expecting people to wait days/weeks/months to find another boss is absolutely ridiculous.

No it doesn't. I did mention KSing is fun in the second sentence. No, it doesn't make you a papaya if you enjoy ksing it just makes you a mapler that likes to harras people. Which is why KSing is bannable. Harrasment.

It doesn't really matter what the 'rules' of KSing are because there are people out there who are stronger than you and don't care for the matter. To them, rules are for noobs.

Just ignore these types of people.

This is absolutely ridiculous. It may be well-mannered to leave someone alone who's slowly soloing a boss, but it is by no means outside of their rights to KS them. Bosses are a free-for-all, and they always will be. Don't try and make up rules for things that there are none; you're reminding me of the idiots in early Mardia that would kill a crow for a hime channel, and come back nine hours after claiming the channel was their's because they killed the crow.

IT DUN WERK DAT WAY

It's a generally accepted rule to work around flaws in Nexon's free-for-all system to create a better experience for everyone. You wouldn't like it if someone intruded on your pianus solo and proceeded to loot the drops, would you? Where did I ever say that whoever kills crow claims ownership to the map after leaving it?

Being a fragile Archer, that has happened to me many times. Usually they do more than just come in, and kill me with the blood booms. I haven't complained once. That's the risk I face by going to FFA bosses. I would be much better off if bosses weren't FFA, but they are, so people that suck at bosses, including myself, just have to deal with it. Pianus having FFA drops is pretty odd though, I wish that were changed, and I'm surprised it hasn't been after many years of level 10 beginners vaccing all the items after someone else kills it.
