Like treasure chests that are really monsters in disguise that are more than capable of wiping your party. Pretty much every RPG has it.

You're probably looking too much into it. Just like back then with the picture of aran and the supposedly other 4 revealed heroes.

There is a tree there however. It's tallish and it has brown leaves.

If the character looks too much like that drawing, then unless it's covered by the ToS for that contest if the artist is not credited with the inspiration for the character design it's theft of intellectual property. But knowing nexon they've got that covered with legalesse.

Edit: To add more... justification? The tileset inside the portal/mirror looks like it's from Leafre... or you know, looks like the same area as the one in the Aran tutorial when Athena's evacuating everyone to Ellin Forest.

Would make sense, if the boss really is Cygnus. Which is more than likely.

Just look at the ground. The only two places I can remember with that kind of ground are Leafre and Ereve. But that bush and some of the background above the tree really make me think of Ereve.

I'm going with Ereve on this one. Cause i feel like behind the blurry tree there is a gazebo/arch/dome type thing that you see in the Ereve maps.

That's the tree that Shinsu and Empress Cygnus are lying under, I think.
Either that's a bush or an above-ground root but it looks really similar to it.


EDIT: If you look at it in regular resolution, you can clearly see the Gazebo behind it. It's definitely Ereb.

I completely forgot about this, but i've seen a couple months ago for that "Design your own Black Mage" contest. Yaji from MSEA drew something that really fits such situation.
The evil side of Empress Cygnus, and named "Queen", like the newest boss.
And the screen was submitted in Sep 01 2009, 00:36.

Sometimes the best ideas come from people playing it firsthand. But either way, this is a depiction of the Black Mage being female, the theorized storyline is that Empress Cygnus is a subordinate of the Black Mage.

It's actually a good plot line because honestly -- after twoyears, who would have expected Empress Cygnus to be a sinister peach.
