Epic MapleStory find (Sleepywood music on Sirius Satellite Radio)
#21
God damn, all you people must be deaf if you think it's the same. IT'S NOT. THEY ARE DIFFERENT. THE CHORDS ARE DIFFERENT. THE INSTRUMENTS ARE DIFFERENT. MY EARS WORK. I have to pick this pomegranate apart as my HOBBY and I can tell they aren't alike. So STOP.

I am not deaf because the site refuses to load on my end. (ahem.)

The thread starter is right, Rory Hoy used the sleepywood song or Nexon used his... whichever came fist. Here is proof for all you non-believers. First, I got an MP3 of sleepywoods music from here. After that, I found a site that played the beginning of the Rory Hoy song, but it was only a sample. Since I couldn't (didn't feel like looking) find a MP3 for the song, I used Windows sound recorder to record the song from the site.

I took the two songs and placed them side by side in Magix music maker, I didn't have to change pitch, or tempo for either tracks. All I did was increase the volume of the sleepywood MP3. I started the track by playing the sleepywood song, then after that, it plays the Rory Hoy track. Then in the final part, I had the sleepywood song start, then the Rory Hoy track slowy fade in. Here is a Screen shot of the program, just to give you a visual of what I did.

Here is the MP3 of what I did. The reason I didn't have the two tracks play instantly at the end is with music, if you have two of the same instruments playing the same exact notes, it blends in and only sounds louder, which is what happens when the Rory Hoy song fully kicks in. Enjoy, and great find thread starter.

[Edit] The more I listen to the track, I noticed Rory used the same "guitar" instrumental part AND a similar bass line. I haven't seen an artist this lazy since P.Diddy

For god's sake. You don't work with music. Don't try to tell me something I KNOW is not true. Of COURSE it sounds louder. pomegranate sounds louder when there's more pomegranate making noise! Is this some kind of pineappleing prank? Because I don't see how it could be anything ELSE.

Wow, fascinating. I suppose there is nothing new in the world anyway so no one but Nexon will mind if Rory Hoy really is selling modified SW music!

Cheez, is electronic music your hobby? I'm interested to know what is really going on here Smile Unthor's method seemed pretty convincing to me, if that is what he actually did - what do you think is wrong with the way he conducted it?

EDIT: Oh is music your work? Sorry I'm getting a bit confused here.

Don't assume I don't work with music, I play guitar and piano. I know what I am doing. Obvoiusly you can't be convinced, so I provided more proof.

This is where I recorded the sample of the Rory Hoy song. Click on the headphones under the play length of the track and it will open a new window, where you can preview any part of the song. I previewed the very beginning of the song, and recorded that.

I also re-edited the tracks in Magix Music Maker. The MP3 is here. What I did this time was

- in the first part of the song, I did a side by side comparision with the volumes as equal as I could get them. It's almost 4am, so I did my best being doing that this tired.

-For the second part of the MP3, I cut the the tracks at every bar, and had them take turns playing.

- For the third part, I did the same thing as the second, except I overlapped the tracks and adjusted the volume so the transition from one track to the other was smoother

- and for the last part, I did the same things for part one and two, except I cut the samples every two bars and had them take turns while keeping the transition from on track to the other smooth.

Here is the screen shot of what I did.

This is not a prank, it's just my observation. And to me, it sounds like Rory Hoy stole the sleepywood track.

Being able to play an instrument does not give you good ears. And you sir, do not have good ears. Pitch or no pitch, it doesn't mean it's "stolen".

To answer that, I compose. Sort of. Most of the stuff I do tends to be just me remaking some songs from scratch. That requires I be able to make everything out in a song. My ears work just fine and I can tell while a few of the notes may be on target, the chord is wrong and the instruments are a good bit different.

Not only that, but the sleepywood music sure as hell isn't the first bit of music to play that. I'd provide the proof, but it was something I heard years ago on the radio that I didn't know the name of. I tend not to listen to music much anymore. Only when I'm listening for things.

Ahh, I see, a lot better than me then! I'm almost certain musical sense isn't really related to whether you've got good ears not, but I'm sure you must have fantastic ears to be able to compose - I have a lot of respect for people who can create their own music, so props to you. I understand you make a hobby of rearranging music. If that is true, you must feel quite strongly about how people talk about Rory Hoy as "stealing" people's music. Indeed I agree that nothing is truly "original" in this world, so there's not much point arguing it really, anyway.

And I guess that's why none of us will ever know one way or the other. I personally found Unthor's evidence quite compelling; evidently you did not; but it's immaterial. Well, what can I say except good job to Rory Hoy for having good taste in music! Of all the thoughts in this thread, I think most of us can agree that Maplestory music is pretty, especially Sleepywood's!

I do have good ears, as I have been playing guitar AND composing music for 7 years now. To me, the songs are similar. When played together, they blend in. Not because one is louder than the other, but because both songs are hitting the same notes at the same time. They're even the same BPM. I will agree that the instruments are different though, but that doesn't make it a different song. If I played The Beatles - Yesterday on an accordion, would it make it a different song? no, it would still be Yesterday. I may have said that the song was stolen, that may be a bit much. But I do think he drew inspiration from the song, took parts of it, added to it, then called it his own.

I read up on Rory and found out a few things about him.
He is 19 years old and autistic. His parents were musicians, and he was always around music. He is also a filmmaker, making his first short movie at 15. He was alway into computers, which is how he makes his movies and songs. He has a real ‘feel’ for creating tracks, especially electronica, chillout and ambient stuff.

Now, this is my assumption here. Being autistic, the guy probably had trouble making friends in school, as school kids can be pretty mean to people with disabilities. Since he was into computers, I'm sure he found Maplestory from an online friend or stumbled apon it by sheer luck. While using the game as an escape and a way to meet people, he noticed the style of some of the songs in Maplestory. Most notable, sleepywood, since it is an area you get to by level 20 or so. Intrigued by this song, and being into "chillout" and "ambient" music, he drew inspiration from the song, and made a track using a similar chord stucture, similar note patterns, the same BPM, added more to it, then called it his own. Again, this is just a theory as there is no way to know unless you ask the guy himself. Cool

A lot of artist do borrow from others. There is only so many notes available, and thousands of musicians. Someones song is bound to sound like someone elses. Original music is hard to come by these days. I do agree that there is no point in arguing. I think we should let the people of southperry decide if they sound the same or not.

I have to disagree with you about Maplestory's music being pretty. It's cool at first, until you hear it for 8 hours straight. Rolleyes I'm guessing more than 75% of MS players have thier music turned off, and they listen to MP3's instead.

Haha Wink. I guess that's because I don't play MS anymore! Yeah, I can't imagine 8 hours straight is too fun. (Although, for a 2D game, in specific comparison to certain other 2D games, I'm quite impressed that they took the time to write music that you could put elsewhere and not immediately think "oh it's game music." Then again, I've always felt MS was a 3D game being "different" by masquerading as a 2D game...hehe.)

As for your other research regarding Rory, very interesting stuff. I say interesting because I have a client with an ASD at the moment. Well done for actually looking it up, I'd have been too lazy. Haven't listened to the rest of Rory's stuff but when I get some internet worth attempting I will have definitely have another listen.

You don't hear it. At all. Anyone who agrees with you is just as bad as you are.

Actually my fiance is a graduate in Music (Composition) so he composes a lot too. Smile Always great to see more composers around the place. What music genres (rock? pop?) do you usually do?

Just because you can't hear it, doesn't make everyone else wrong. I'm starting to think you are Rory Hoy, and you're trying to defend your song.

I'm trying to deal with idiots, but apparently telling people the truth about something is defined as trolling. All you people are doing is crying that a bunch of notes follow the same pattern despite it being on a different chord and everything. OMG NEXON SUE THEY STOLE YOUR OH SO UNIQUE NOTES THAT NOT A SINGLE OTHER PERSON IN THE WORLD HAS EVER DONE THEY ARE STEALING THE THEME EVEN THOUGH IT BARELY RESEMBLES IT AT ALL OH NOES

I don't really know. I'm strange tht way. I've got the ear for it, and I generally know what I'm doing when I get down to it, but my technical knowledge is sort of lacking. That said, the only genres I can usually name are not quite so popular anymore, and I tend not to deal with them. I think whenever I try an original piece I just end up tinkering with things. Very random stuff.

Cool stuff. My fiance is interested in the full gambit from modes of ancient Greece through medieval European, pop, rock, and even modern music. (I personally find modern pretty dubious lol, I don't see how you can see music in a contraption that takes your own urine and drips it variously onto your own chest. Or setting a piano on fire and calling it a composition. Very admirable, but honestly I think there have to be SOME boundaries. O_X)

Maybe you'd enjoy doing Music at university. The School of Music at my university is a real out-there sort group, modern-day divas with amazing voices etc. It's great to see budding musicians and the sorts of pieces they can come up with - adds a fresh taste to the "newness" that everyone seems to be trying to come up with.

Now days I hear so many music that sounds the same. Not suprised anymore.

But then again, how many people actually listens to MS music?? I know I used to, until it lagged me up too much, and I disabled them x.x
