Most of you probably don't know this, but I'm half Dutch. (As in, my grandparents on my mother's side immigrated to New Zealand from Holland). So... I'm half way wanting to take a further interest in my Dutch heritage and I'd like to learn a bit of Dutch. So... anyone know any websites or something that will help me learn? I'm considering taking a course at uni but I don't know if I'd have to time or effort to do that.

Dutch is like English, with worse spelling.
English - Dutch
Good - goede
Speaking it is very different though. D:
I don't actually know Dutch, so meh. Babel Fish is your friend?
'Oh Werkelijk?' = Formal "Orly?" :>

Hmm. I've heard of Rosetta Stone, but I don't know if that only does Spanish or if it also has different languages. I guess just goggle it. I'm trying to learn Hebrew/Yiddish because of my heritage... let me tell ya, it's hard to find something to help me learn it.

Rosetta Stone does indeed have Dutch, I just checked it out. Only downfall, it's super expensive unless you uh... get it illegally lol.

You should definitely take it in university too. I'm taking German and it's an easy 3 credits towards the 36 credits I need outside my major. And German and English are both Germanic languages, as is Dutch, so the differences aren't too great.

I'm more worried about it being too much extra work on top of what I'm already doing (Which will be 3rd year physics, topped off with a little 2nd/3rd year maths). But I will have a look into the available papers.
EDIT: Apparently it's not offered here anyway XD

My native language is Russian. I had to learn English as a child because we immigrated to the States. I personally do not want to learn any more languages because I feel it would be a waste of time. I came to America at the age of 9, and though I was surrounded by native speakers I would say I fully adapted to the language some time in high school and mastered it in college. I think trying to master a language takes years and years and years, and I am not comfortable using languages where I have to revert to my primary language to say half the things, or cannot understand complex ideas.

It's not a waste of time to learn another language if you only know two, especially if one of them is as obscure as Russian.
I think the most basic set of languages anyone should know before learning additional languages would become a "waste of time" would be Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, and Spanish.
Even then, it wouldn't hurt to learn some Indian and African languages, Russian, Dutch, Italian (this one's easy as hell) and Arabic. Oh, and Esperanto, just for the hell of it.

i love languages, i know english and spanish 100%, a little french and i've messed around with german/japanese/portuguese/dutch/hungarian/finnish and i love them all. learning different languages is not really a waste of time, 'cause for me, it's more fun when you hear someone saying something and you understand them. (crappy reason, i know, but there are others)
if you're like me and understand explanations well from reading alone, you could try this to start:
http://learndutch.elanguageschool.net/
i browsed over it and it's not that hard. it can give you a good foundation for when you decide to take a real course (which is what i do) and maybe you'll learn a couple good phrases.
hope it helps.

Well, I can help you if you need, I guess.
It's my native language but even still, I can say it's easy to learn.
Btw, just torrent download Rosetta Stone. I used it to help with beginner French, works good...

Heh.. Dutch isn't as great as you think. Being Dutch myself, I have to say that I don't really like the language. I like English and Spanish more, I bet Matsy can relate with me on that, lol.

I know 3 languages, and I don't mind knowing a few more.
Russian.... wow... Russian sounds pretty gentle, like French :3
Used to have 3 Russian girls in my class, and my father took Russian classes when he was in university. Apparently it's pretty hard to pronounce words in Russian...
To Wani: maybe look for Dutch learning books online?
