When did you start Programming?

At what age did you write your first, interactive program?

By interactive program, I mean a program that takes an input and returns an output based on that input. Hello World is not an interactive program. A program to check if a number is prime, return the nth Fibonacci number, or even to take your input and throw it back at you is an interactive program.

By write, I mean from your own brain. Being told how to do it by a tutorial, ie copying it down, does not count.

JS, PHP, Perl, Python, Java, the Cs, TI calculator programs, etc. If it runs on a computer, takes input, and spits output based on that, then it counts as a program.

If you are unsure of your exact age, guesstimate.

I know I had several programs on my Calculator as a Freshman in Highschool. Quadratic Equation and something to calculate binomial probabilities. That would have been aged 14 to 15. I remember being introduced to programs in 8th grade by some crazy guy in my math class, so that would be 13 to 14. I guesstimate 14.

Does being told to do it, but not how, count?

Teacher in Computer Science class, first assignment, "write a program that outputs the square of the input number".
In PL/C, on IBM 370 mainframe, sometime in the Jurassic.

I voted but that doesnt necessarily mean im still doing php >< i dropped learning about it and my knowledge about it last year. this year was stressful enough and i couldn't even do HTML... so yeah.

I started with a class on Visual Basic in 9th grade.

Started using Turing when I was in grade 10. 14 due to being born in October.

My first real programming experience was in Grade 10, Visual BASIC. Really sucks though, because I haven't gotten the opportunity to take any sort of programming class since then. My computer studies teachers suck.

But I've been playing with graphic calculators since I was like, 9. Stole my older sister's graphing calc. >_>

Does making a grade calculator in Excel count?

13 - 15 years, don't remember.

My cousin told me about QBasic and I made something simple. You wrote your name or whatever, and it gave out: "Hello, ______".

PHP/html is markup/scripting.

PHP counts.

Never even used a graphing calculator.

18 years old if you count my first C classes at the university.

Much earlier if you count making excel sheets that calculate things (taking your maple stats and spiting out your damage, for example).

Ooh you're right, my bad. I tend to tie together html with PHP. Scripting is still programming, however markup is not. Sorry for the mix-up.

This past week I started doing a project for a class here in France that involved making a program in C that would simulate molecular dynamics. It had been 3.5 years since I had last used C language. It felt quite good going back to programming in C, you can only get so much from excel.
