I heard about the game when people kept asking me if I played it. In 2006 or '07, I made a guild called Gaia. The name stems from some culture's name for mother nature, but everyone thought it was in reference to the video game.

Really? Surprising. I was there, and extremely active at the time when I was in my High School years (go figure), and I kinda stopped going on there when they added too much crap and I couldn't keep up with it. :|

They called it "Gaia Online" or "Gaia the game". I always thought it was a crappy game akin to Runescape. I still do not know anything about it.

Fun Fact: Myself and my old-school Broan guild FishMongers were all from the Top Fishers Community of Gaia circa '03 or '04 maybe. I had two bronze trophies for Gambino. You all know LoOpeDd (however that's spelled). He had multiple gold trophies and I think took the overall one month. He got in with the Korwyn/Jjang crowd and never hung out with our little guild in Maple though :< Needless to say, sitting and fishing translated well to sitting and grinding.

If anyone visits that site for some laughable reason, I've got a nice stash of absurdly valuable stuff to give away if I remember my password. The cost will be eternal flaming and ridicule.

Agreed. There was constantly news about it, and I never saw anything. So I got fed up. But I heard it was done a while after I stopped browsin' Gaia. I started again today, and nothing's really changed.. Except for the number of people that likes to bump threads, there's even more of them.
