(On another note, anyone else notice that Fantastic Contraption runs really slowly in Chrome?)

I can't tell, I don't lag in either Chrome or IE.

Do you keep the special effects off? It runs a lot faster.

Edit: I've been comparing speeds and amount of rods of the designs I made for Four Balls:

 Spoiler

So far, the last design is the one that is both simple and fast.

Yes, I keep them off.
...This comp doesn't have the latest Flash installed. Maybe that's why.

Edit: Omg yes it runs so much faster now. Stupid me, attributing it to Chrome and not Flash Rolleyes

Anyway, Blankout, I made some modifications to your last one.

http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1499066 :
5 wood rods
6 water rods
1 clockwise wheel
~9.62 seconds

3 wood rods
5 water rods
1 clockwise wheel
13 seconds

:< I think tweaking would speed it up a little but you get the idea.

11.5 seconds tweaked.. same components.

2 wood rods
5 water rods
1 clockwise wheel
14.2 seconds

Slower, but even more minimal ;P

i really wonder what the purpose of adding more wheels to it would do ... since ironically it doesnt make the original wheel spin any faster... then again they all spin at one rate.

it makes it stronger i think?

I didn't look at it (not allowed to on weekdays, lol).

I'm thinking that more wheels have more horsepower (or acceleration, whatever it's called). I mean, a bicycle will accelerate faster than a unicycle, right (*doesn't study physics*)?

made it like lot faster for you

took it down to 7 rods in a different way, a little faster >>

Still ~12 seconds though.

Combined both techniques to drop it to 6 rods, this one is rather slow though Sad

Think of it in terms of force. When a pinwheel spins, its arms apply a certain amount of force to whatever's in their way.

If you have a single-wheeled pinwheel, then the force of that one spinning wheel has to lift up the weight of the ball (read: resistance) and sling it up and forward.

By hooking up additional wheels, you make it able to apply that much more force to the ball. The reason why the self-rotating speed doesn't increase by much is that there's no resistance to overcome when it's self-rotating.

Take a look at my 5-wheeled sling on the previous page and see how it fares if you take out all the auxiliary wheels.
