Sarah Wrote:It's not just anime characters, Spidey, but I rarely see people on the internet or anywhere really going I'M GONNA NAME MY KID ANGELINA JOLIE. Anyone who names their kid after anyone like that is just as ridiculous and probably shouldn't have kids. When you pre-choose names -- especially ones connected to things you enjoy, you're taking away from that child. When I said a name should be personal I meant it should be something that you feel when you first see the baby.

Really? You don't see people saying they'll name their kid Angelina if their favorite celebrity is Angelina Jolie? Nobody said anything about last names, the last part is what makes it sound strange. Just take the first name, and you'll see it's not that uncommon at all.

Also, lots of people pick out names for their children before they're born. It doesn't matter where they got the name from, if they like the name then it's fine if they come up with it on the spot or actually put thought into picking something nice.

In fact, most people I know don't think of a name on the spot as soon as their baby pops out. I don't know if that's common around where you live, but most people I've known pick out names long before the baby is even born.

Sarah Wrote:But giving it an anime name or a stupid name like CLOUD pretty much dooms it to be harassed for the first 13 years of it's life and can take a serious toll on it's self-esteem. It shouldn't be about what you think is cool, it should be about what's best for the child. If you like the name Cloud then go change your name, don't put a kid through that.

Also Isaac and I were talking about this just a couple weeks ago and some really bad(ass) real names include Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii and Number 16 Bus Shelter.

No it doesn't. Like I said, the names he picked are normal. They're rare names that you don't see much nowadays, but they're still normal names. One of the series he picked also has a character named "Maria" in it. If he really liked that name and used it, would it matter that he got it from an anime?

And come now, Sarah. You're not seriously comparing a name like Beatrice to "Cloud" are you? I guess if the name isn't common today, it might as well be something extremely stupid, right? Because if it's not a name found in every other household, it's dumb. By the way, I actually had a girl named Cloud in my class in High School, and she was born before Final Fantasy, if that's where you took the name from. It's an odd name, but nobody really cared. In fact, people liked it because of how unique it was.

Also, you really like bringing up bullying. You realize bullies will find literally anything to pick on if they really want to pick on you, right? Even stuff that's fairly normal can be a source of bullying. They don't care so much what they use for bullying as much as they care about the target they're bullying. In most cases, anyway. I guess I can't speak for you, since you're a self proclaimed Bad Girl that picked on others when you were a kid.

I am not really a fan of Steampunk, it's okay, and some of it looks good. But a lot of it looks gaudy as all hell, some Victoria Era stuff is gaudy as well. But when comparing the two I see Steampunk as nothing more than a retarded cousin.

Alone it's perfectly fine however.

well, take away the "rusting" process and sure, i can see what you're saying. afterall steampunk's inspired by, moreso than based off of.

Patchouli actually threw me off a bit because it's not rare for girls to be named after flowers: Daisy, Rose, Lily, etc. Hell, girls are even named after months and seasons. Patchouli doesn't sound so bad.

Yeah, out of all the names ZUN made up, Remilia is the most realistic sounding one. I looked into it and really can't find any record of the name aside from ZUN's Remilia. I could be wrong of course, but y'know. May be a problem because of how overwhelming the number of Remilia Scarlet pages come up when searching for "Remilia".

Ah, well trends are interesting things. Back in the 80's folks were naming their kids after characters from movies. Some names were even documented as "official" names due to how common some of the names were becoming. After Star Wars, girls named Leia spiked up in statistics.

Alright, I can respect this idea. You feel that at a moral level, it's wrong because you feel that we shouldn't be so hasty as to predetermine a label that will stick with them for life without actually seeing them. In that, you see it as impersonal and that the names should reflect the child in some way and how you feel about them, correct?

In my opinion, that's very hard to tell right at birth. A child is essentially a clean slate, in terms of personality at that moment of birth; and their physical features aren't that defined yet, so you usually can't quite tell what aspect of them stands out the most to you. I can see it that you might notice something like the child's eyes or dimples as standing out to you, and then pick a name that you associate most with those features- like perhaps someone you knew; and in that it's personal. However, the thought of the name might just not come to you that easily, like Spidey states.

The one thing you as a parent do know the most about the child, though, is that you love them unconditionally and want to care for them dearly. You know this even before the moment the child is born and you first see the baby. And you know, that's all that really matters, that you hold this/these child/children (in case of twins or something) preciously. That's all the thought in the world you need to name a child.

Alright, cool, no problems here. I concur with you here. I think it's wrong to put something that becomes a social stigma upon the child for something it didn't want or ask for in the first place. It should only be of in the child's volition if it wants to have something considered to be a social stigma placed upon it, but at birth, you'll just have to let them grow up naturally and with everyone else. I do agree with your views on bullying, and am going to disagree with Spidey on the below statement:

Kunagisa Wrote:Also, you really like bringing up bullying. You realize bullies will find literally anything to pick on if they really want to pick on you, right? You're understating the psychological importance of names. While you acknowledge it has impact, you say its equal to any other bullying, like bullying little Apu because he's the short Indian kid who smells funny. They aren't the same. It's a very difficult topic to really explain, but essentially, it really challenges a very big part of their identity. At this point, they can't heal the mental wounds inflicted by this even if they changed their name, as it has already made an impressionable emotional impact on them and changing their name wouldn't remove their memory of the fact that this name wasn't their original name. I do agree with Sarah on this.

Sarah Wrote:Also Isaac and I were talking about this just a couple weeks ago and some really bad(ass) real names include Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii and Number 16 Bus Shelter.

But these names are some really different examples, in terms of how they affect child development.

Children with names like Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii and Number 16 Bus Shelter tend to develop whimsical, individualistic, and exhibitionistic personalities; because they can't even take themselves seriously when they understand the significance of their names, therefore tend to become jokers and lack seriousness in conversing with others.

At least in Spidey's examples of "Konata" and "Sakura", they're real names and children with names like that they will be able to accept it and could likely grow up like any other child.

Bullying isn't accounted for in here because I'm not sure how to possibly consider if they would be bullied or not based on their name.

I really appreciate your effort to stand up for me, but at this point, it's no longer really about me. At least, I don't think so. Also, a certain series had nothing to do with the Beatrice.

To be blatantly honest, I probably wont seriously think about the names for my children until I have that chat with my...wife?

This. Most definitely. I also want to give my child a name that will not provoke bullying in their young life, but still be a respectable name for their professional life. Of course, I assume I'll have to like a name to actually name my child it, but in no way would I base a name just off what I like. I want my child to grow up as an individual separate from me. If they do what I like then that's fine, and if they choose to do something I don't like (granted it is still acceptable behavior by normal standards) then that is fine.

I'd let him/her choose their own name after they mature. Until them we'll just call him "hey" or something "Hey, dinner's ready" /funhouse

butterfλi Wrote:Remilia is a very adorable name. It sounds very classy. Friends can call her Remi. In fact, most of the of Victoria Era names sound very euphonious: Scarlett, Alice, Elisa, Elsie, Sara.

Shame many names from that time are no longer used.

Remilia on an Asian girl would make her sound Chinese. In fact most Western names on an Asian child makes them look Chinese because other Asians don't choose Westernized names. "Saito" sounds a lot more kick-ass than "Arthur".

I've always thought Remilia was an actual name was well, strangely. Sure rounded real. Marisa = definitely real though. I also know a girl named Aya, haha. Though the names are obviously not based off of Touhou. I'm usually unsure about male names, because I'm extremely bad at naming males. If I had a son, I'd probably try to name him "Thanatos" (Greek personification of "Death") or something. Just kidding, btw. I'd have to refrain from doing so, and I'm sure my future wife would beat the hell out of me anyways. Lol!

I'd rather try to stick with a name of my own ethnicity, but it wouldn't be bad to name my future child based off of a name from another origin. There's nothing wrong with naming a child after an anime character's name either, IMO. If you're naming your child .. let's say "Haruka" and you like that name because you think the character is moe, yeah, that's a problem. If you named your child that because the name has a meaning to you or if you think it's cute, that's another story.

I mean, names can't get as bad as JERMAJESTY.

Just to say, Remilia existed as a name before the people who made Touhou were born.

My aunt married in to a family that doesn't give their kids a middle name. They pick it when they get older.
