The thing is, Elsea is a kid mentally. The mangaka goes a step further to show this by drawing her super-deformed (read: Chibi) for a few panels every chapter.

So I can't even picture her as a teenager, let alone an adult.

I see that kind of thing in a lot of anime. It seems more of a change of character and pace than an actual portrayal of the character to literally be a child (the style does come off more child like, giving a sense of youth and innocence).
