4chan is basically like southperry on an extra large scale, with more and less focused areas of discussion. On southperry, an thread can last a while because it does not get ran off or deleted (though, it can become necro-able), while 4chan can have threads that run its full life of discussion in a whole day, even less, and be deleted as more topics are created. The topics of discussion are broad, ranging from specific anime types, japanese culture, paranormal stuff, subsections of porn, photography, and then the infamous random board.

Well, it really varies from board to board. /jp/ moves much slower than boards like /a/, /v/, or /b/; discussions that last over a day are far more common here than on those three, and particularly crappy threads are weeded out pretty fast in comparison.
