Max damage lukless with VIP Staff (999 INT, 23 LUK, 150 MA)
(4 * 999 + 23) * (150/ 100) = 6028.5

Max damage with 165 LUK and Elemental Staff (857 INT, 165 LUK, 178 MA)
(4 * 857 + 165) * (178/ 100) = 6395.54

That plus the benefits of higher level gear for potential bonuses means low-luk is the way to go in the long run, yes?

Yes, plus you have to tack on other benefits:

- The Elemental Staff receives the best potential stats of any item at this point.
- The Elemental Staff also gives you a +10%/+25% boost
- The VIP staff cannot be potentialed

- The VIP staff cannot be potentialed

I meant items that aren't potentialed yet. As in, ones that are potentialed pre-patch still have potential, but no more can.

Also noting your calculations are a bit off. At 200 you should have 23 LUK and 999 INT, not 13 LUK and 999 INT.

My friend potentialed a VIP staff we got yesterday - further confirmation they can still be potentialed.

Though, Mages is a big generalization. For Arch Mages, Elemental Staves will not lose out to VIP ones.

The elemental wands 5-8 also give the highest potential stats and elemental boosts without needing 165 luk. Just saying.
If the thread-starter's numbers are valid, I could be 5% stronger by going hi-luk and acquiring an elemental staff. No thanks, with the money saved by not buying a lvl 163 staff, I could go on a cubing frenzy and get a lot more than 5%.

Going high-luk comes with other benefits as well. You are able to equip the reverse overall and the reverse gloves that have better stats and can give you an extra skill point (very useful post BB) and the level 90 shoes which can be chaosed for Matk.

(199 * 5) + 4 = 999

Every point from levelling up plus the 4 base adds up to 999 int.
The remaining 9 points plus the base 4 in luk is 13.
