With the way threaten works now, it takes 20% off of the monster's weapon attack stat, which doesn't necessarily mean that it takes off 20% of the damage dealt to the player; however, after the Big Bang patch the monsters weapon attack isn't a value that goes into a formula, but rather the damage that the monster deals. My question is whether or not threaten will be shaving that damage down by a full 20% still.
If threaten does shave off 20% of the touch damage after the BB updates, then it seems like Paladins will be MUCH better tanks, since they get power guard to reduce damage by 50%, then threaten to shave off another 20%, then Achilles to reduce damage by yet another 15%, and to top it all off they have a chance ot completely negate damage with guardian.
I would be very happy if threaten worked in such a way after the BB patch, but if anyone could explain to me just how a paladin's defensive buffs and debuffs work together I would be very grateful.

Before Big Bang, threaten removes about 34% damage which is 20% attack.

with the current quadratic nature of attack stat -> mob damage...
reducing attack by 20% (aka multiplying it by 4/5ths) will lower the damage by (4/5)^2.
thus the damage is lowered to 16/25ths... lowered by 9/25ths = 36%.
So it's currently better. After big bang it seems it'll lower damage by just *30%. Granted with nearly everything doing less damage due to defense actually making a difference, the lowering of threathen's effectiveness isn't too bad.

I know for certain that the enemy's attack is also reduced. If the enemy's defense is also reduced, I do not know and nor is it really relevant here.
I'll put that on my list of things to do. Dusk also requested that I show exactly how much damage is being reduced by defense.

Shield Mastery's been buffed to match or beat Threaten, anyway, since it depends on gear rather than a fixed amount.
Post-BB I'll have 1700 wdef, that makes 5100 with Shield Mastery.
If I remember the def formula correctly, that means a flat 35% reduction to monster attack, or 1275, whichever is a bigger reduction, for my Paladin, currently at level 152.
So say a mob does 17000 damage. You get (30% threaten * 35% wdef * 15% achilles) to drop it to 6600 dmg, then PG drops it to 3300.
Any word on whether PG is still half effective on bosses? Then it would be ~5000 damage instead if it's a boss.
Say a mob does 4500 damage though (eg. a Chief Guardian). Goes to 3150 after Threaten, 2677 after Achilles, 1402 after WDEF, for a grand total of 701 damage from the baddest mob we have. Without Threaten it's still only about 1250 damage.
