It must have something to do with the redefining of homosexuality in the US. "Gay" used to be a positive term, became negative, and now is more neutral ("Dude you're so gay" means something totally different from what it would've meant in the late nineties). Backstreet Boys, Justin Biever, etc. People who claim to be homosexual or bisexual might not even really be gay/bi. I am genuinely concerned about endocrine disruptors.

That's more a matter of society than the average gay person at work.
People want happy little boxes they can put everyone in and being bi throws that off for some reason, probably due to the cultural concept of one mate per person and the incongruity of how that works with multiple sexes of interest to a person.
2010-08-25, 10:12 AM
So, if I'm attracted to both short men and tall men, I'll never be able to settle for just one mate?
I agree with you that people have a hard time believing bisexuality. I'm just not sure the apparent contradiction with monogamy is the reason.
2010-08-25, 10:41 AM
It is. They're have been studies regarding why it's easier for people to accept hetero and homo sexuality but think of bi as just as phase, or being greedy or indecisive or confused.
People don't associate gender as just another physical trait like hair or eye color. It's an entire imposed sense of identity and you either like one or the other even when it's been well proven that the normal is more in between and most of the polarization is based on societal expectations not actual interest or function.

QFT Eos, and adding my theory of sexual orientation as an individual trait heavily influenced by genetic factors of autosomal incomplete dominance. The classic textbook example of incomplete dominance shows two snapdragons, one red and one white, producing a pink offspring, and seeing as how sexual orientation is not a cookie-cutter, black-and-white phenomenon, but exists in varying degrees on a wide spectrum, it makes sense (at a basic, fundamental level) that the alleles involved with the specific coding of a personal's sexuality both have a share in determining the resultant trait.
All this being said, this is a crapshot theory that even high school Biology students with a simple grasp of Mendelian genetics could brainstorm, and one that could be invalidated by logic (ex. is being 100% "gay" impossible due to reproductive inability between two homosexuals, which would produce someone with two "gay" alleles? Are bisexuals only the product of a homosexual and heterosexual reproducing, and an equal pairing of respective alleles? These are just two of a million different questions that would determine the validity of such a theory). In the end, though, it's important to regard sexual orientation as occurring on a spectrum of possibilities as opposed to the cookie-cutter paradigm, especially when searching for potential genetic markers.

Getting past genetics there is also the social confusion regarding sex and sexuality I've previously broached where people don't quite get the difference between enjoying sexual activity and experiencing sexual attraction.
Just because you fool around with guy friend and experiment and it felt good didn't make you gay. What you did was biologically designed to make you feel good no matter who or what it was with. There's a whole subclass of people who get hung up thinking that because the sex felt nice that must be what they're attracted to, whether it's homo or hetero and it can take years, or even decades for them to realize that even though what they did was fun it doesn't necessarily define who they are or what they're interested in. That too is based on cultural misconceptions where if you have sex with the same gender and like it you must be gay. It's a tragic waste for people to be hung up on being what they believe is expected of them to be and living their life according to what they think is "right" based on what other people have defined for them rather than what they actually feel. This also applies to people who feel compelled to live up to ethnic, cultural, religious or sexuality based stereotypes.

This is a quality thread. I agree 100% with you Eos, despite being straight. People shouldn't feel restricted simply because of the way other people view them or classify them.

At least in some areas it's the other way around - 'bisexuals' are reluctant to admit they're either homo- or heterosexual. OKCupid has a record of what sexuality people record in their profile, as well as the people they proposition for dates & stuff - turns out at least 2/3 of the people who do identify as bisexual are only going after one sex. Of course that's not to say they wouldn't or never have been in contact with both sexes - the majority just has a strong preference. I haven't actually looked at studies to back it up, but I've also heard it's fairly common for teens to have homosexual experiences, even if they self-identify as straight, and never fool around later in life.

I like the way you put it. I agree that the majority has a strong preference for one gender. As for bisexuals who go after one sex, some might intensely be interested in one sex and do not mind fooling around with the other. I did take into account that you can't record accurate data for this subject. Too many people can just lie about this. Although I must admit OKCupid (is that a dating site) has an ingenious way of recording people's activities.

[edited] Sorry I read your post wrong Why would someone go after someone their own sex if they wouldn't be able to have sexual intercourse with them?
