Rather surprised it actually took this long to mod a PS3. I guess there must've been some insane complications in doing so.
I do find it funny that a couple YT comments have people STILL doubting this is legit even though he just proved it otherwise.

To add onto this, its been found that the PS3 they use to test this is actually a debug unit.....which can already run unsigned code.
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/usb-mo...l-backups/ (the UPDATE)
Joystiq Wrote:Update: The OzModchips video appears to use a debug PS3 system, which has the capability to run unsigned code (including code from a USB drive) and load games from the hard drive without the use of any USB dongle. This doesn't mean that the claims of PSJailbreak's effectiveness are untrue, but it certainly calls them into question. Why use a debug system to prove functionality that already exists in a debug system?

How DID they get their hands on a debug unit, anyway?
@Sn1perJohnE: Is your new avatar Katsuragi Keima's English teacher in Kami no Mizo Shiru Sekai?

Go check out my "atlus' Catherine" thread and watch the video
Also, you can probably find debug units online somewhere. From the video in this thread, the unit is an older model, so I would guess they could have gotten it second hand from a game developer or something.

Well, that explains the curly hair.
As for the debug unit, I doubt it would have been easy to get it anyway...

Googling PS3 Debug Unit brings up what seems like quite a few places that have gotten their hands on some units, including IGN and Slashgear.

To clear things up, the console acts like a debug unit thanks to the USB drive.

From what ive read, you dont get much of the actual functions a debug unit has by converting a retail unit to a debug unit. So im not sure about that.

I've just read it. Putting the console in debug mode allows you to load security copies, homebrew and unsigned software.

I wonder how much this dongle will be then. If its the 169 bucks i saw when skimming, then F that. Maybe around 50 like I saw somewhere else. Either way, unless there is a fully public way to allow this, without the purchase of a dongle, its meh. Main reason why the PSP is awesome to hack and such, is because you basically just need the console and the software, and thats it.

Actually it depends, sometimes you can't hack a PSP without a Pandora Battery. If you care, this USB thing works like this:
- Emulates a Jig Card, which is the one Sony uses for repair and debug issues,
- Emulates the firmware of the syscon and the TRM checks we have a debug console loading the debug kernel and lending all the functions to the VSHMAIN. Therefore letting you load unsigned software.
Problem is, Sony can easily patch this, since they should make the PS3 load the syscon before booting from the USB drive. :/

From the sounds of this, it doesnt seem quite legal either.

Modding is not illegal. Not legal either. There's a flaw there.

What I don't get is, why would you PAY for such an USB stick? Just download / copy it... lol...
All x360 hacked firmwares are also free to download...

You need the hardware to make it work.

see? That looks like a normal usb drive to me, that can be copied?
Or is it like a usb hardware device, with a decoder chip on it?
