50 movies you should see by the age 14

I'm so glad Spirited Away not only made the list, but the Top 10 and was the most-voted upon film by the institute.

Note to all Southperricans: If you have not yet seen the film, SEE IT NOW. It is absolutely phenomenal.

I dislike spirited away, but anyways. I've seen very few of them and I'd add to the list many films


The manchurian candidate , The Great Dictator , Dr.Strangelove or how I learned to stop being afraid and love the bomb , Battleship Potemkin , Citizen Kane , Monty Python ( ALL OF THEM ) .. I can go on and on and on.

Gonna look into Spirited Away considering how vocal people have been about it.

Most movies by the guy behind Spirited Away are just beyond awesome. Most recent movie would be Ponyo.

Interesting fact, hey didnt use CG in a lot of their early films.

I do remember one Cartoon Network, they showed on Toonami 4 movies including Spirited Away from the same directer. They are the best movies I have seen.

...I agreed with everything you said up until that last word. Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa are not on the same tier as Ponyo. Ponyo is too much of a children's movie. It's still good, but it's not as good as the former. :<

I've seen 7 1/2 of the ones on the original list, and nothing you mentioned. Heh.

No one likes watching super old movies. The people who made the list are too old! I've only watched like 5 and half of 3 other movies. I'm glad Spirited Away is on that list. Goooood movie. The cartoons won't be forgotten, but future generations aren't going to want to watch the old graininess of the old non-cartoon classics.

I respectfully disagree, good sir. I (and many others, I'm sure) often enjoy old movies. Two examples off the top of my head - Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) and The Third Man (1949) (neither of which, sadly, are on that list). A movie's age doesn't necessarily say anything about its quality.

c) WHY IS ROMEO + JULIET ON THAT LIST.
I watched it a couple of nights ago on netflix with my girlfriend. I had seen it in part before - we both knew what we were getting into. We were watching it more to make fun of it than to enjoy it, I would say. But seriously. Taking the story and modernizing it? Fine. Keeping every last line true to the original Shakespearean text when the setting is modern? Not fine. If anyone out there doesn't feel the same way, I would be interested in hearing their side of the story, because I myself can't see any merit in that whatsoever. It just makes it completely absurd in my eyes.

Yes. I likes me some Metropolis (not the anime). That movie is bad ass.

Gotta change mine to 18. Citizen Kane was one I saw, but for some reason i thought it was called Xanadu (thats what his mansion was called iirc).

This. 12 Angry Men is an amazing movie. And the best part? No fancy special effects. Hell, practically the entire thing takes place in two rooms and it's black and white. Says something about how good the actors are, I think.

Oh, by age 14. I'm turning 18 next month, and I think I've seen like two of the things on this list. And of them I only remember Toy Story.

I must watch too many movies. By the time I was 14 I had watched 23 of these movies, which is more than all but one person who has posted in this topic thus far has seen total in their entire life.
