magnifying glass question

This is an uber newbie question. I've searched the interwebs but no luck. You don't have to equip an item to magnify it right? There are several identified equips that can't equipped due to class and I can't figure out how to use the magnifying glass on them since you can't click on any tab in inventory while the cursor holds something. How does this work?

Double click the glass. It switches to your Equip inventory and lets you choose which equip to use it on.
