I mean, I don't want to be a jerk to all you guys that collect them, but it really baffles me that people would put so much emphasis on them to the point of paying half a billion mesos on one. They don't seem to alter gameplay much to me, and some of them heal for the same or less than chairs you can get for free. Am i just missing something?

Not everything is about function.
For some it's about having something that other people don't
For other it's a statement of wealth
Some are just attention whores
Some just think they look cool

That's what kind of game Maplestory is. You collect stuff. You upgrade your gear (for no real good reason). You fill out the Monster Book (more collecting). You complete quests that give little to no exp or reward.
Just cause.
I mean there's nothing wrong with that, if you like that kind of thing.

some people spend billions of mesos and tons of nx just to do max dmg and be like: "zomg me proz0rs has 80atk skandars dexless u suckz0rs do 2k per star nubz0rz!"
other people spend their mesos with items that you can make a collection, you cant judge how the person enjoy the game.
i have 38 chairs, and idc about my equips, they suck, and still i can do everything like any other that have godly items and spent over billions of mesos and nx to get a piece of equip. and i don't think i spent over 3bil mesos to get all my 38 chairs.

Well I'm not saying that it's wrong to want to collect them, it's just the prices on them seem way too steep for something that has little use so I was wondering if there was something else to it. >_>

there are better hats than white/yellow/red/blue maple bandanas, and yet those seem to be popular and expensive.
why question a pack rat instinct? the price is for supply and demand. want them cheaper? nuke every account with over x mesos and stop inflation.

I only collect event/PQ chairs. I refuse to pay mesos for a chair, especially ones that cost over 100m (Beach chair is an exception, paid 60m for it because it reminds me of home :B), I personally think it's a waste of money. Most of them do look awesome, though, and it's probably why most people collect them. Or simply for the sake of collecting, which is pretty fun to some people. I think some of them are ridiculous-looking, though.
I have the Lotus Leaf chair and it's actually semi-useful, heals 200 HP and MP!

Same thing as collecting monster cards, they serve no function, but are fun to collect for some, not so much for others.
Some will argue that drops and lore are useful info, but its not like they cant be found with a simple google search most of the time, so its the same principal for chairs.

Levels let your character do more things and access more content. 4th job signifies accomplishment after tons of hard work and opens you up to a large variety of skills. Scrolled weapons improve your damage and let you train and kill bosses faster. Friends are fun to be around, support one another, and add another dimention to the game that code never can. Chairs recover a negligble amount of HP.
Look, I'm not trying to say people are stupid for wanting chairs, I was just wondering why people would be willing to spend so much money on something that doesn't do much anything. I mean even monster cards are free. I was just curious to see if there was something about it I was overlooking.

Everyone has different tastes bro. While some like to grind to 200. And some like to scroll the most powerful weapons. Some like to sit in fancy chairs they payed for.

As things stand right now after a certain point, it's the exact opposite - the higher level, the LESS there is to do.
It's just something to collect. Lord knows there aren't a lot of things to collect in this game, chairs are one of the few things that you can collect which aren't going to be priced based on how good they are (like weapons) or restrict your ability to do things by filling up a useful inventory (Medals). It's a status symbol for others, "Look how wealthy i am in game, i can buy aesthetics items for exorbitant prices!" No different than most things people collect in real life.

Yeah, it's like how some rich people spend millions of dollars on private art collections and stuff.

Like other people have said, it's more for collection purposes. There are a lot of things in life that people collect that don't really have a function i.e. stamps, coins, cards, etc...
I used to collect every single one until my chairs got hacked, then I stopped.

Gonna take a page from the WoW book. It's to make your character more "Unique" or "Stand out" from others. NX clothing can only do so much, so why not have something else make you stand out, aka chairs? Certain pets / chairs can really give that edge, so what's the problem? Honestly, I've struck up a lot of convos from people noticing my "Music Note Chair", because it's something people don't see everyday, same with my PB pet.
It's kinda the same thing in WoW. People, like me, collect lots of vanity pets and mounts to stand out more from the crowd to try and get noticed out of the ordinary.
That's my 2 cents anyways.

Imo, I believe there are more people who collect just because they want to have them than to show off.
It's like collecting coins. Or paper clips. Or rocks. Or collecting every item/character in some rpg game, including those fricking miss-able ones (Suikoden2 D:<).
It's like we still have those trash collecting genes from when we were rats. And we feel like we're missing "something" if we don't get them. lol
Maybe this is why Pokemon is such a hit. Even though all the games are pretty much the same. -_-;

Why do Maplers spend real-life money on cash shop clothes, faces, hair? They have no function whatsoever.
For that matter, why do people in the real world buy expensive furniture that performs the same function you can get for a tenth the price?
