Mafia Signup Thread
#1
Hey everyone. This is the signup thread for a game of mafia. If you haven't seen the thread here, here's the background in short: I'm new to the forum (introduced to it by Doctor Omega) because I've been looking for a new one to join and I thought I'd try to get people into playing forum Mafia now that I'm here. If this isn't a good board (The Shady Tree, that is) for such a game to be played, let me know (and blame Rayquazza [see the other thread] >_>) and we can move it elsewhere. It seems like the place for it though, at least the way I run games (I tend to try to make interesting stories out of them).

To simplify things, use this format when signing up: the first person can start the list with
1. [your username here]
and each subsequent poster can copy/paste the previous list, adding themselves in the next slot, so we end up with
1. [person a]
2. [person b]
3. [person c]
etc. I'm sure most of you don't need to be told that, but meh.

ON TO THE RULES. For the basics, consult the thread that I linked to earlier.

All private communications will occur through private messages or some other form of non-public communication (AIM, IRC queries, etc.). The main point of this being that private communications (such as the mafia discussing who to kill or the detective sending the host his or her target) must remain private. While roleclaiming is allowed (e.g. posting to say "I'm the detective, I investigated [person] and got [result]"), no private communications, be they PMs, AIMs, or anything else, may be copied/pasted, quoted, etc. to support a roleclaim or for any other purpose. I emphasize this point because it became apparent to me that this isn't always the case in forum games. It is, however, in ones that I run, so keep that in mind if you sign up. I see it as essentially equivalent to revealing your card in IRL Mafia to support your claims, a move that I've never known to be legal.

I will be distributing all roles via PMs and will expect night actions via them as well. Not only is it convenient, but it also allows me to make sure that I have a log of everything in case a dispute comes up.

Each night cycle and each day cycle will last a full 24 hours. This may seem very slow to people who have never played a forum game before, but the extra time is necessary both because of time zones and so that people have enough time to think through the clues.

During day cycles, people will be voting on who they think is in the mafia and should die. Votes should be in bold and preceded with [vote], so that it's completely clear that it's your actual vote. Votes may be retracted or changed before the time limit is up, but votes to abstain will not be allowed. The "winner" of the vote will be determined by simple majority (i.e. the person with the most votes dies) rather than actually majority, as it would result in very few people dying by vote. In the event of a tie vote when time runs out, I will flip a coin to determine who dies. Just for the sake of having it not be arbitrary, the first person in the tie (alphabetical by username) will be heads and the second will be tails. The one whose side comes up dies. It may be a bit overkill to be that specific, but hey, why not.

Nothing else that needs clarification is coming to mind right now, so if there are any questions, feel free to ask. The rules should be pretty specific at this point with the combination of the thread I linked to and this one.

Last but not least: A list of roles that may or may not show up in this game, for people who aren't used to forum or IRC games.

Town aligned:
Townsperson - a townsperson has no special abilities. There will typically be several townspeople in a given game.
Cluegiver - the cluegiver has no active ability. As long as he/she lives, every mafia kill leaves behind a clue to the identity of the player who carried out said kill. Once the cluegiver dies, no new clues will be provided.
Doctor - the doctor can target one person each night to protect. If that person is also targeted by a night kill, the kill will fail and the person will survive. The doctor CAN target him/herself, but he/she CANNOT target the same person two nights in a row.
Vigilante - the vigilante can target one person each night to kill. A vigilante will typically be limited in the shots he/she gets (usually 3, although this can change depending on game size).
Detective - the detective can target one person each night to investigate. The detective will be told the results of his detection at the end of the night by reply PM.
Bus Driver - the bus driver can target two people each night. If either of his/her targets is the target of any other night actions, those actions instead target the other person who the driver targeted. For example:
Person A gets targeted by the mafia as the target of a kill.
Person B gets targeted by the detective.
The bus driver targets person A and person B.
The end result would be: person B gets killed by the mafia and the detective learns person A's role (believing that he got results for person B). The targets get switched, but no one is informed of that fact.
Armor - the armor has no active ability. However he/she cannot be killed by the mafia or vigilante at night; they can only die to votes during the day.
The Lovers - the lovers have a passive ability and an active ability. They start the game knowing each others' identities (a power otherwise reserved for the mafia). They are allowed to talk via PMs/other private means. If either one of them dies, the active ability comes into play - the surviving lover is allowed a single vigilante-style kill the following night in revenge. However, if he/she chooses not to take the revenge kill, the chance is lost forever.

Mafia aligned:
Mafia member - a regular mafia member knows all of his/her fellow mafia members and may confer with them via private methods. The mafia carries out a kill each night, and they must specify the member who commits each murder. The same mafia member may not kill twice in a row unless only one member remains.
Godfather - the godfather is the leader of the mafia. He/she has the ability to fool detectives; if a detective target the godfather, he/she will be informed that the player is a regular townsperson rather than a member of the mafia. The godfather is also the one who will be sending me the PM with the final decision on who the mafia is killing and which member of the mafia is carrying out the killing.
Thief - a half-mafia. The thief does not know who is in the mafia and cannot kill at night, so he/she does not count against the townspeople for their win condition. He/she is, however, mafia-aligned and therefore wins if the mafia wins. The thief can target one person each night and block his/her action (if he/she has one). For example, if the mafia targets the same person as the doctor but the thief targets the doctor, the doctor's protection fails and the kill succeeds. Bear in mind, however, if the thief targets the mafia member who is carrying out the night's kill, that kill will fail, so attempting to figuring out who is and is not on your side is very important for this role.

I may add more to this list if I think of them.

One last note: for anything that may involve random chance, I'll be rolling dice. Real dice. I dislike RNGs (I've been programming for too long to trust the things), and I play D&D, so I have three full sets of the things that aren't getting any use right now.

LET THE SIGNUPS BEGIN.

Edit: A couple more rules I thought of. I'll mention these in the game topic too, when I make it, but here they are.
1) There will be two threads for the game - the gameplay thread and the discussion thread. The gameplay thread may only be posted in by LIVING players and only during the day. As I'm not expecting to have mod powers for the game, I can't really enforce those, but PLEASE abide by these rules. The discussion thread is for anyone, in or out of the game, to laugh, rant, or whatever. The one rule on that thread is that NO discussion of cluesolves, who is or is not suspicious, etc. may take place there. It's to comment on the game or say "aww, I died :<", not for non-players or ghosts to say "I KNOW WHO DID IT IT WAS ________".

2) Similarly to the restrictions on the discussion thread, players are NOT permitted to discuss clues or anything else with dead players or non-players. Talking about them to other live players on AIM, IRC, etc. is perfectly fine. Just keep it to the people in the game.

Also requesting a private forum for "mafia" members, if that's not too much trouble. Kind of like the donator forum. Eosian, can you set that up?[/COLOR]

EDIT : MasPan, what we do on Smogon is set up our own IRC channels. One for everyone, one for the mafia(s), and one for the village. The village one and the mafia one are usually kept under lock and key (+NTSI).

The only downside to that is that a disconnect while someone's afk can cause them to miss events. Maybe an occasional dump somewhere that people can read and keep up with?

That, or people can be unwilling to get a client or use IRC in general. It IS very handy for quick conversations, though.

Well, it's a solid start so far. I'm hoping for at least 16 people, so I'm going to leave the signups open for a few more days and hope for the best. Those of you who signed up already should spread the word around to other members - you know them better than I do, I would assume.

Sign-up rates have slowed down. This saddens me. All you guys who signed up should start recruiting. Forcefully. <_< But seriously, you know the people here better than I do. See if you can't scrounge up some more interest. More players makes for a better game. In the meantime, I'll keep harassing people about it on IRC. :3
#17
I think this is the max that we can probably go. It's always roughly this amount of IRC.

Anyways, if the first round turns out to be a success, more people will join later.
#18
I'm still hopeful it will get a bit bigger. At the very least, we can probably get Doctor Omega on board. I'll leave this open until let's say... Wednesday night. Unless of course signups decide to spike.

Like that'll happen. D:
