white head bands for non DBs

when you go to create a character, can you select DB, get your white head band, then decide you'd rather be a mage? Or are you forced to become a thief?

I'm actually about to check myself right now, but the websites lagging out..
EDIT: I see that I have a dual blade CS, this will probably not work

I think no since dual blades have to be a thief.

so I talked to the mage statue in lith, and it asked me if i wanted to become a mage. o.o
Then i speak to Grendel and he asks if i want to be a mage, i have the right stuff. O_O
