Movie: The Last Airbender
#21
It would've been better if it could've been done without the outright break-neck pace.

They had to rush all the dramatic scenes to try to finish all of Book 1 and it made it seem somewhat stilted.

I still enjoyed it, but don't know that anyone unfamiliar with the story would've.

Fuck this noise. WHY GOD, WHY? How in God's name can an entry in the Twilight film franchise score higher than the Last Airbender on Rotten Tomatoes? Yes, I was expecting it to be probably pretty crappy; but to do worse than something from Twilight means its pretty piss poor.

You know, I personally didn't care about GLORIOUS ASIAN RACE as the casting for The Last Airbender; so as long as the material translated well on screen- but I agree that the casting could be pretty distracting for some fans of the original series. But Jesus Christ, did Shyamalan make all the wrong choices with casting either way. It's worth showing what Roger Ebert had to say right now:
Roger Ebert Wrote:All three actors are pretty bad. I don't say they're untalented, I say they've been poorly served by Shyamalan and the script. They are bland, stiff, awkward and unconvincing. As the villain, Shyamalan has cast Cliff Curtis as Fire Lord Ozai and Dev Patel (the hero of "Slumdog Millionaire") as his son Prince Zuko. This is all wrong. In material at this melodramatic level, you need teeth-gnashers, not leading men. Indeed, all of the acting seems inexplicably muted.
Jeez, and that's coming from someone who appreciated the original material.

Also, I laughed at an excerpt RottenTomatoes used from a review:
Quote:Let's just be honest: M. Night Shyamalan is an idiot.

Well, M. Night Shyamalan is an idiot indeed. That's not news.

I think we can all agree here that M. Night should never direct again.
He's had too many absolute failures.

So is what my sister's friend said true? Is Fire Bending limited to manipulating fire, or can they still create it?

There needs to be some fire around them.

I knew it would be a terrible movie as soon as I found out M. Night Shyamalan was the director.

I think it was the name changes that made me rage most.

Yeah, it kinda sucks. Makes sense, but sucks. Iroh (who's not fat) can firebend without a fire source, though.

They massively buffed airbending, somewhat buffed waterbending, but kind of nerfed earth and extremely nerfed firebending. Hell, firebending is crap now.

At the names, M. Night believes that the names were Americanized and so were pronounced wrong, so to him, the way the movie pronounced it was correct.
Go figure.

What did they do to uncle D:
My biggest issue with the movie: no giant ass ocean spirit, avatar state fusion >:O
I understand not being able to condense a whole season into 2 hours but how could you f'uck up such good source material so badly!!

i think the fact that they kinda skipped major points in the plot, leaves the sequels (if there is any) in a really bad position. if they hop skipped to the north in 10-20 minutes, that means that they skipped the swamp water benders, the kyoshi warriors, and a few other people that are all VITAL to the 3rd book.

Dude, it sucked. Not worth watching unless you're a really die hard Avatar fan.

If you ignore the butchering to the original story, and view it as a brand new story, how was it? The acting? The effects? the story? I've heard it was rushed but that's it.

It was like trying to watch 20 episodes of a series crammed into a 90 minute time slot... Oh wait...

Even worse, Hazzy. Thank god I'm a die hard Avatar fan.

Acting: Worst acting in the world. Zuko and Iroh were decent, but Iroh wasn't fat.

Effects: Actually pretty decent. However, I laughed at that one Earthbending scene in the prison.

Story: Yeah. It was rushed. Not really any twists, but the first season of Avatar didn't really have any twists, either. Not really emotional either, but that is probably due to the acting.

There's a reason it got a lower % than Dragon Ball Evolution on Rotten Tomatoes.

Oh, and he's making a second one. They didn't fire him.

I re-watched the first season and a half the other day, and I thought that the movie did a fine enough job covering the major events of the first season. The script sucked, but most of his scripts suck anyway.

Ah, I didn't see this comment earlier. REALLY NOW? During the same interview where he said it was his first experience with the green screen, he also said that the production would take much longer because of a "certain bending scene". I, along with many others, was convinced this was the giant ocean spirit. That's pretty upsetting.

It was probably the ocean scene they were talking about, it just didn't get done the way you'd think.

Well, Im a die hard fan of avatar and i can remember the story vividly in my mind from book 1 ~ 3. hopefully its not as bad. But yeah, the race bending was an issue since 2008.
