I have this Maple Life A package lying around. I can use that to make a DB, even though I'll be bypassing quite a bit of essential quests?

This. Also, I don't think you would want to use it if you could, since you would be missing out on all of the main, required Dual Blader quests.

^ I figured. I read up on a bit of those quests on Ellin Forest, and it all starts way back when you're still in Maple Island. o.o
