8000 WAS the actual number in the original version, but the way Vegeta said 9000 in the American version of DBZ was simply memetastic that people will be disappointed at a more normal tone of voice.

I feel like Kame hame ha wave is too redundant and throws the flow off.

Despite the fact that 8000 sounds better, 9000 just sounds so much better. And it's not just because that's what I heard when I was younger, or the fact that it's a meme.
