Well, I think most people knows what kind of gender I prefer, but you'll see if you click on the Spoiler tag. I used to play as males a lot, but as I got older, I realized it was sorta boring to stare at pixelated males all day. So afterwards, I started making female characters just because it's more fun to play as them. When I was younger, I based a PSO character off of Haruko (yes, from "FLCL"), and made it look like Haruko, exception being the extremely long pink hair. These days, I notice I still go for the same gender, except I play cute tiny little females with light blue or dark blue hair. What do you go for?
Images below are all from a game known as "Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst", which I'm currently playing again, but this time, with my brother.
Game's been out for quite some time, so sorry if the graphics aren't up to date as most 3D MMOs nowadays. These are pretty much "Dreamcast" graphics, because this game was originally on DC (well, the PSOv1 and PSOv2 versions anyways, same graphics, etc).

Generally male, unless classes are gender exclusive. Then I'll just pick it based on the class I want.

Males. Always males. I'm already used to being treated like a guy. I don't like being treated like a girl.

Usually females. I was kind of half/half on Maplestory. Only females on Dungeon Fighter. I almost always go with female if a game asks me to choose my gender.

Mostly male, female only if the class feels like it's better played as a female (Mages, etc).
Usually, I don't care.

I ALWAYS go male, unless the game has classes that are gender specific (DFO, for example). Then, I just go for whichever class suits me the most. Usually, it's the males.

No preference, tbh. I have many male and female characters on any given MMO.

I prefer playing females due to being, in fact, female. Though, everyone assumes I'm a guy if I play either gender, soo... it might not even matter much. Usually female characters get better clothes, too.

Except in Maple where they're all bikini clad whores.
I mean seriously? What kind of defense is an Amoria Top going to give me? FEAR MY BELLY BUTTON WRATH.
Someone had an I Dream Of Jeannie Fetish.
For my own answer - Whatever I feel like. I tend to think of gender as nothing more than another character trait/accessory and look for whatever best compliments the role I feel like playing.

I have made plenty of both male and female characters in RPGs. I don't really have a particular guideline for this. It depends on my whims as much as the other options for the character, like hair color. When I made my Corsair a female, it was mostly just because I didn't think there were going to be a lot of female Corsairs early on, and I liked the idea of playing a female Pirate.

Except in MapleStory, female.

I play almost exclusively male chars, even when I don't have the choice. I feel odd when i play a female char, especially my spear-woman mule in maple, as its kinda like lying to everyone about the person behind the char and i never liked playing warriors anyway.

I used to always play female characters, but after Maple, it's kind of a 1:3 male to female ratio when it comes to gender-choosing in MMOs. I just found it generally fun to play as a guy at times.

Interesting replies, then there were some typical replies which I knew were coming. Anyways, wow, so there's some females that can play as males, and males can play as females on SP. I always thought there was less people like these, I'm surprised. xd

A couple years back, I would have only chose males.
Now, it really makes no difference to me.

I dont realy care that much, I mostly play males, but if a class looks good or nice to me I pick up the female one. I also pick up female if they are the only ones who can cast magic (ie DFO)

Oops, somehow missed this response:

How so? Just because you play as a female character doesn't mean you're going to run around pretending to be a girl, I hope. That's one of the best ways to make people assume you are. If they ask you about your real gender, and you were to lie and claim that you are a girl, of course. If someone were to party with you, and didn't even know you, they probably wouldn't even care. The only way you'd be treated like a girl is as if you're with a party of preteen males with raging hormones. Otherwise, I doubt anybody cares.
When I used to play a female character on another game (and it wasn't MapleStory), I never faked to be a girl. People from a specific server knew really well I was a guy, because when they asked, I told. They were not creeped out or assumed I was homosexual in any way. I don't think they even cared.

This, basically. I don't really care because I view it the same as controlling a female character in a RPG even if she is in a party with guys. IE: Terra, Locke, Sabin from FF6.

I always play as a female in most MMOs, except if the female doesn't have any of that "appeal" to me then I go for the male.

As far as to actually play, Male only. If there's around 4+ subclasses that use the same equipment minus a gender variation, I might make a female character to use those equips, but I'd never really play it and would avoid contact with people since I don't want to start misunderstandings. I am male and intend to be treated as such. It gets creepy otherwise.
