Time to move on
Rick Wrote:Does anyone actually mind if Southperry just runs WITHOUT extractions? I certainly don't.

The revenue the ads generate is probably only enough to exceed the costs of the whole site because extractions are performed. Remember the traffic we had with the CWK patch?

That said, it can run on it's own either way.
I think what you guys aren't seeing is that there are a lot of people who come here only for the extractions. That's the reason I came here, originally.

That being said, I don't play MS anymore, so I'm all for it being cut if it saves the site.

EDIT: I agree with Takebacker though- they probably generate the ad money.
I guess for me I'm just trying to understand "Why now?" I understand at some point everyone needs to move on, but it was just days ago when you were reassuring us users that while things seemed to be slow around here there was nothing to really worry about. I can't help but feel like this is a rushed decision. One you haven't completely thought through. But hey, that's just how I see it. I don't know much about you other than what you portray to us in your posts and IRC. Maybe you've been debating this for days, weeks, maybe even months. Is this site, the people, something you're genuinely willing to put aside so suddenly? And not to guilt you, but while you're making this decision for yourself, you're also forcing the decision on the rest of us without a viable option other than hoping someone meets your qualifications and buys the site...

I know money isn't a problem, but if I were to donate enough money to cover the cost of keeping the site up for the rest of the year in order for you to properly find someone to replace you, would you consider it? Because I'm not ready to see this site go yet >___<
Wow. This is saddening. This is really the only MapleStory forum I've really liked (and doubly so since the main page doesn't have the word 'forum' in the URL, meaning this is the ONLY major MS forum that doesn't get blocked by my family's firewall), and cared enough for the community to even venture into the non-MS sections once in a while. Hell, I think this is the only GMS forum that has placed additional major emphasis on what's happening in other versions other than KMS. As such, I've found that the community here feels more globalized compared to the others.

But, if you really need to do this, then go on ahead. It would be unreasonable for us to force you to stay, and if a good candidate to take over the site is found, then just rest easy. This community doesn't seem like the type that would destroy itself easily.
This is sad, SP is like a home to me in this world called the internet. It's welcoming, informative/helpful, it has the awesome Funhaus okay not really.

I certainly would not mind switching this board into some other form, say, a free forum board where we archive most/all that we've written over the years for reference purposes and discuss newly added features for those who still play MS. Certainly it's going to die over time, but hey, at least it's not 2 weeks' time.
As for whether or not extractions are going to be continued, I don't really care. This community is already special enough without the extractions.

Well, the lurkers aren't really part of the community. But oh yeah, I forget that's what keeps the site running.

If it does come down to dying and enough of you are interested in a more phased death I could move the forums to one of my boxes that's not particularly utilized right now until it dies a natural death from lack of content/interest.
You still gonna hang around with us? Can't imagine SP without chinchillas.

Also, if Eos is up to it, I could see him doing a fantastic job, or maybe Devil's Sunrise. Possibly a joint effort between the two?

And if it ends up staying active for 30 years?
Oh god no. This is the only maple forum, Well the only forum in general, I actually use, since the community is alot nicer than all the others I've been to. All good things come to an end I guess. Frown

Good luck.
MetaSeraphim Wrote:And if it ends up staying active for 30 years?

Seems rather unlikely, but that particular box has been sitting paid for and mostly unused for the better part of 5 out of 9 years now, what's another 30?

This is pretty much all I have to say.
Rick Wrote:Does anyone actually mind if Southperry just runs WITHOUT extractions? I certainly don't.

ive got to ask you this then: what would SP offer that other MS-based forums dont already? SW has its guild/boss organizations iirc, and basil is the equivalent of MS eBay. without the extractions, it'd just be another MS fansite. nothing to draw in more traffic.

Personally, i wouldn't think this a bad idea, but it kinda ...not invalidates...nullifies? it makes the main draw of SP be not as important. (not able to draw the right word ATM)

Let's move this line of inquiry over here.

Yeah, I know 30 years is a long time. But there are some forums out there that have manged to stay active even though they're 10+ years old.
I have come up with a easy way to extract patches. It is by far not nearly as good as Fiels though.
step one: you will need the previous version of ms and the new version... DUH
step two: you must download a wz to xml program and a wz repacker...
step three: extract the chosen wz file of the previous version...
step four: locate your file and wait at least 5 minutes or a noticeable time difference...
step five: repeat step three with the new version BUT DO NOT REPLACE FILES!!!
step six: find the newest created files... these should be the files added in the patch.
step seven: open up your re packer and find the new files listed in your xml folder and extract them and begin to make a thread like fiels...

thoughts?

EDIT: prediction was a bit wrong. DOES WORK THOUGH AFTER TESTING
at step 5 you need to rename the previous versions file and then manually add the new ones to that file...

EDIT 2:
works great Tongue

As long as people continue visiting the IRC, it shall live. :>
*points to my post where I just found out a way for people that aren't as smart as Fiel to extract patches...*

Okay, so now anyone can do extractions. the matter still stands of Who is deserving of running the site? It'd need to be someone who could handle the task.
