I Lol'd at this. I could inquire the same: Do you believe everything some book tells you?
I'm a very open atheist with strong ideals, and I could argue my point of view with yours all day. We atheists have our argument based upon scientific evidence and empirical data, while Religion is traditional beliefs based upon the words of a book. My belief in God personally died with my infantile beliefs of the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny, I simply cannot believe in something I cannot see, and in something that makes no sense based upon the basic laws of physics.
I'm not trying to bash religion at all, I tried it once, and I despised it. All that surrounded me was hypocrisy and disdain for the non-believer, a cult you might say. People were telling me to do things that they weren't even doing themselves, pathetic, why believe in something when it's own believers aren't devout. Now I'm not saying by any means every single religious person is in the wrong; go ahead and practice your religion, just don't bother me and I won't bother you.
I can't tell you if my beliefs are right or wrong, but neither can you; it's an argument that will continue until eternity. All I can say is, don't condemn someone for not believing in something that contains no evidence whatsoever.

God saved those people because he said they were the only ones deserving it. These people sound far from perfect. K what? You do realize that God did curse them afterwards. Stop nitpicking parts of the bible and leave out other details please.
How is my logic flawed? After reading through it, you sound like a die hard athiest disregarding logic. How bout a simple live and let live logi sound?
Earlier we were talking about bashing, personal insults are a bash. No surprise a Christian began that.... your blaming the christian guy as a reason to start bashing. Nice.

THere was a news report that this generation is slowly letting to of Christianity. If they obey their parents, shouldn't the rate stay the same? They go their for most of their lives and are told its the truth by the people they love and trust the most. Because that's what the parents believe...? No pomegranate they will try to raise them the way they feel best. You may think Christianity is wrong, but that's your own opinion. Others think that it's the way to salvation and by teaching them that, they show that they actually DO CARE.
Most people can't just wake up one day and say "hey this pomegranate is not real". You have to do a lot of soul searching and have some basic education and understanding about how the world really works. ... Again you demonstrate your awesome skills for stating the obvious. And this has nothing to do with the arguement. There are PLENTY of resources that state both sides. You jsut need to know which one you believe in DUH.
"Because they want to, and by doing so they believe they won't go to hell or whatever." What? The only reason why I'm Christian is for eternal life buddy. I think i'd rather be good in this life, and still enjoy life and make it to heaven, than risk not believing God and getting stuck in hell. If you don't believe in heaven/hell, good for you. I
You make it sound as if its fear and ignorance that makes them continue "believing" in the gods. I have nothing to say to this cause i forget the statement your replying to.
Did you know that the most religious states in the United States are also the most violent and the ones with the most death penalty?O...K...? Doesn't mean that the whole population is Christian though. I don't see what you're trying to prove

Im just wondering. How do CHristians impose their beliefs? I mean you don't need to follow them. THe only reason why there are missionaries is because they care about others and want to convert them to save them from hell. If you don't believe it, fine. You can refuse kindly and most missionaries will back off (cept for the hard core once, which need to be eradicated). If society imposes these beliefs (I wouldnt know, im in Canada, and your in America) guess the only thing you can do is just ignore it?

The following is a response to lonesoldier1:
(I don't want to quote the whole thing.)
First of all, please watch your language. Most people here are capable of having a relaxed debate.
Its not an assumption that children of religious people are forced into their parent's religion. That is why I don't believe in the term Christian child, I prefer to call them children of Christian parents.
Parents have the right to raise their children however they want in the United States of America, doesn't mean they are doing it right.
Exactly. You are a Christian not because of you want to be good but because of the benefits and fear they promise you.
What I am trying to prove(When I states that the most religious American states are the most violent) is that Christians are not "moral" because of their religion. Christians are only "moral" when they think they are being judged. When they think they can get away with things, they try to. Another example is that usually when there are power outages besides the poor, religious states have a higher chance of joining in the riots, proving my previous point.
Christians have imposed their beliefs on the world for nearly 2000 years. At first that religion began as a small belief some Jewish tribes in the Middle East had. It soon became the main religion in the Roman empire and then it spread into other branches like Catholicsm. These Christians created theocracies, and armies. They killed the non-believers for not being Christians. They try to convert people all the time. Besides physical ways of imposing their beliefs on us they have forced their way into the American government, which is suppose to be SECULAR. They try to change laws and try to add religious objects in public space to spread and be proud in their ancient beliefs.

Aggressors?
The aggressors were usually Catholic, a different brand of the faith.
The protestants escaped from Europe to America and created a system based on their beliefs there.
That's like saying North America loves war because Americans decide to go to war.

1. Stemmed "from" Catholicism not "into" due to corrupt practice of selling "get out of hell" free cards from the Catholic Church. This idealism in repentance stemmed from mass publications of the bible: See ref: Gutenburg's Printing Press, Martin Luther, Martin Luther's 95 Thesis, Protestant Reformation of the 16th and 17th Centuries.
2. Due to the massive stemming from topic [1] there are numerous "brand labels" of Christianity that people subscribe to: Calvinism, Armenism, Baptist, Non-denominational, Biblical, Methodist, Sectarian, Presbytarian, and I could go on forever. It is important to give every section it's due and to not be lost in generalizing Christians as "Christians."
3. Even though I do agree that there have been a series of battles stemmed from Christian ideology such as the Crusades and the Dark Ages, it is dubious as to how much of the battles waged were purely based on Christian theology or twisted to suit the demands of ever-expanding empire nations. Much like modern America, our Presidents have used Christian ideology as a source of power to draw from the dogmatists within the Bible Belt. There is no helping this. You will always have those who don't know their own faith.
4. Of course Christians convert people. We don't want them to go to hell. I think it's heart-warming.
5. I apologize for using sarcasm. But damn those Pilgrims and that Mayflower. Invading America like that and affecting the government. Christianity was always a part of America since it's days in colonial subjugation to King George III of Great Britain. I wish we maintained the same Christian-rigor as the Pilgrims, but this is not to be.
6. Finally, my two cents: You cannot call yourself an atheist if you believe in a god, God, angels, demons, ect. Let me add to this, I cannot respect you as an atheist unless you've read through every religious text, philosophical document, and scripture known to man. Just as I cannot respect a Christian who has not read the Bible, an atheist must be held to a higher premium since they are denouncing the world of spiritual thinking. Even great philosophers such as Emmanual Kant and Thomas Aquinas had some spiritual orientation. I'm reading the bible a second time and I'm starting to read the Koran. There are many things people find fault within the Bible.
MyReflectionPrayer Wrote:When Moses climbed Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments, Aaron created a Golden Calf, a pagan deity from the gold of the exiled Hebrews. When you witnessed this insubordination, you killed and punished accordingly.
Except for one thing Lord. You spared Aaron. In fact, you make him the leader of the tribe of Levites. A tribe of prophets and religious righteousmen. While Aarons pagan followers were put to death, he somehow ascended and became a holy representative.
When Lucifer, one of your most prized angels betrayed you and attempted to raise a rebellion, you sent him to the very depths of Hell. But you never resolved the issue. In fact, Lucifer became Satan and Satan tempted Even who ate of the forbidden fruit and eventually caused mans damnation. Such a deterministic wheel of events seems not within the realm or responsibility of mans domain. But in fact, a questioning puzzle that has never been answered.
But that doesn't mean you have to denounce ever other religion like it's the same thing. Maybe you have read up on Kant, Hegel, and Descartes. Maybe you have already read the Bible and the Koran. But the word atheism is thrown around too lightly just like the term Christianity.
Protestant-derivative Christianity stemmed from Gutbenburg and his printing press. The power of knowledge and education with the Bible. Now-a-days your so called "average Christian" can't quote more than five bible verses from memory much less cite the verse beyond or below John 3:16.
I think we all need to take a break and formulate more fundamentally truth-fractured posts on both camps. Screaming two liners at each other only fuels pathos oriented illogica.

Religion is religion, and Christianity is Christianity. Regardless of their internal divisions they all believe in general same nonsense.
Its true that wars have been used in the name of Christianity not only for religious purposes but to spread the Theocracy's empire. My point being that without whichever the religion the empire has, the leaders wouldn't have had as much power over the people as they did. As I have said earlier, in a Theocracy or if a state has an official religion, if you break the laws, you are not just going against the state, but you are going against the gods.
Currently I believe we initially has so much support for the war on "terror" because of religious reasons. It was made clear over and over again in the first year after 9/11 that the terroist were muslims and we were the "Christians".
This country was founded by secularists, but colonized by religious prudes. If you value so much our colonizers, perhaps you should start a war to return the ex-British colonies to Britain.
I think its disgusting that Christians break apart families, destroy cultures, and kill people in the name of conversions.
I am an Atheist and I don't have to read every religious book to say so. I simply do not believe in god. Its not logical. No matter how many times I read books about Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, I simply will not believe in their existence.

Thats an oxymoron. Atheism is not about what you believe, its not about what you don't believe in.
And the Death Star destruction was a terroist attack done by religious people, aka The Jedi.
And its true that people claim they are Christians when they don't even know what their holiest book is about.

Comparing religion to "the Easter Bunny" and the "Tooth Fairy". Of course you're not bashing at all!
Quote:Its not an assumption that children of religious people are forced into their parent's religion. That is why I don't believe in the term Christian child, I prefer to call them children of Christian parents.
Then, what is your assumption?
Quote:Christians are only "moral" when they think they are being judged. When they think they can get away with things, they try to.
Keep in mind there are Christians on this thread. This is way too broad. Sure, televangelists give us a bad name when their affairs get revealed. That would be akin to comparing say, all Muslims to the ones that crashed the planes into the World Trade Center.
Quote:These Christians created theocracies, and armies.
Of course, now that Western Europe is mainly secular, their armies have evaporated into thin air.
Quote:They killed the non-believers for not being Christians.
And vice versa.
Quote:Besides physical ways of imposing their beliefs on us
I'm not aware of any slayings because someone refused to accept Christianity in the past 100 years.
Quote:they have forced their way into the American government, which is suppose to be SECULAR
Incorrect; though the Founding Fathers were not christian, the majority of the United States, the "founders", were devout Christians. And even by today's standards, the US government isn't supposed to "enforce atheism", unfortunately for you.
Quote:They try to change laws and try to add religious objects in public space to spread and be proud in their ancient beliefs.
Because we think Christmas trees in general and a depiction the Ten Commandments in front of a courthouse threaten my right to not practice any religion.
Quote:Religion is religion, and Christianity is Christianity. Regardless of their internal divisions they all believe in general same nonsense.
But you lump them together and say "they all committed genocide."
Quote:Its true that wars have been used in the name of Christianity not only for religious purposes but to spread the Theocracy's empire. And as we know, nothing ever happens when lack of religion is rigidly imposed.
Let's see...
- Soviet Union
- China
- North Korea
Hm... let's compare human rights in these countries to human rights in the United States.
Quote:Currently I believe we initially has so much support for the war on "terror" because of religious reasons. It was made clear over and over again in the first year after 9/11 that the terroist were muslims and we were the "Christians".
Most Christians don't support killing Muslims for their religion. Would you like to clarify?
Quote:I think its disgusting that Christians break apart families, destroy cultures, and kill people in the name of conversions.
Of course, those who aren't active believers in a religion never indulge in wars. And... where has humanism brought us? (Hm... divorce rates) And I fixed it for you, below.
