Gay Marriage
#1
I think it's time we had an engaging, cool, collected discussion on the issue over a good brew. Considering the majority of members understand the issue, and if not can use context clues/research to figure it out, I'll simply start by posting a fantastic video eloquently highlighting several contentions regarding gay marriage:

With that, discuss!

I'm totally okay with gay relationships and gay people, and I don't believe in the so-called "sanctity of marriage" or whatever. Marriage is just a legal process. I don't see why it has to be such a big deal.

I don't see Gay Marriage and homosexuals as bad. I'm not a homophobe, though I grew up as a child as one. If one loves another person, so be it. The only way gay marriage might hurt people is as if there are a larger amount of homosexuals than heterosexuals on the planet, because this means less reproduction. I'm against a young-child being in love with a full grown adult though, for example. There might a be a specific terminology for this, but I don't want to classify it as anything like Loli or Child-molestation, because this is different.

I hate gay people. Therefore I support gay marriage. Many gay people claim that they didn't make a conscious choice to be gay. In fact, they were born gay due to a gay gene. If this is true then gay people should marry because they will not be able to reproduce children that have gay genes. The only reason so many gay people exist is because they were forced to enter sham-heterosexual relationships and bear children that inherited these gay genes and were eventually expressed in these individuals thus causing them to become gay. If we allow and encourage gay marriage, we will eventually wipe out gay people.

You can't wipe out gays. We are humans not parasites that need to be exterminated.
Are you going to force my brother to marry a boy too even if he is straight ? He probably has the gay gene but(i dont know the whole Gene lingo) its not in effect or something.

Who defines, or defined, what marriage is? Is the it the government of your country? What about your Religious leader? (Pope for Catholics, not sure about other groups) If they defined it, can they redefine it?
Do you believe 'Marriage', or the legal equivilent, should be legally defined as strickly between a man and a women? Yes outlaws all relationships, more or less, involving two same-sex individuals. No makes it legal, and you have your personal belief without pushing it on others.

The video summed up Pro-Gay Rights argument really well, so almost anything I could type would just be redundant.

I have nothing against gay people. I'm on perfectly good terms with gay people, lesbian people, and heck, I think I'm completely unbiased against them. As long as they don't seriously don't try to hook up with me, I'm cool with them.

I support it. More money for the government if they marry, anyways.

I grew up with that belief, and I still uphold to that.

That said... I do believe same-sex couples are entitled to be together and have the same rights as married people. But to call it a marriage too? I find the clarification iffy.

What I don't like about the gay argument:
arguing over the definition of marriage. One of the earliest definition of marriage: "a more or less durable connection between male and female lasting beyond the mere act of propagation till after the birth of the offspring."
Let's keep the definition that way, there is just no point in changing the definition of a word when it have for history meant something else. Especially in some cultures, the term marriage makes itself so clear that it's between a man and a woman.
For example in Chinese, the word 婚 (marriage) is written with a female on the left side and a penis on the bottom right. (but in ancient times it was written as 昏, no woman, (either woman is not important or marriage is all about penis)

Make up another word for gay, I don't care what. and the law should grant similar rights to whatever this unification of 2 same sex is called.

What I don't like about anti gay arguments:
God said no.> oh really? where did god say this, this you hear god say it? can you find in the bible anywhere that oppose it? or did you take the opinion from a child molester?
Allowing gay marriage will allow gay people to shove the penis down my throat all the time. >no it doesn't.
It just feels so wrong and disgusting when a guy is sitting on top of another guy. >ok, it's might be disgusting for some people, but who gives a pomegranate, are you going to sit there and watch them when they do it, or are you going to go making out laws that people can't pick their nose in private?

To the people who said that they believe the old sayings that "men should only marry women", let me ask you this:

Things are constantly changing. A while back, black-people were considered as the minorities, this was before MLK Jr took a stand. Now white + black people are treated as equals. If something like that is possible, what makes you guys think that homosexuals cannot live in peace and be treated as equals as heterosexuals? Note, I am heterosexual, and not like I'm defending either side of the argument, but I want to know why you think things cannot change. Because I know fair well that being open-minded about change is extremely important, it can happen.

Sodom and Gomorrah was a gay city that got wiped by the Lord for being gay.
Leviticus 18:22 - "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." (NIV)
Leviticus 20:13 - "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads." (NIV)

I don't hate gay people. I just think it's ironic that many people who claim that they were born gay and want gay marriage don't realize that they are making counter-intuitive statements. I think it's funny how you're assuming I'm trying to wipe you guys out when I issued that statement. I didn't mention about doing anything of the sort. Rather I just wanted to posit the point that you may get what you want, but it may cost you in the long run. I don't believe in the existence of a gay gene. It's just more convenient for me to use the firm gay opinion that they did not make the conscious choice to be gay in order to show them how that logic will have to apply through multiple lines of reasoning.

I'm simply answering Horusmaster's question. I'm not in the mood to explain my personal philosophy on life and religious beliefs.

I believe in science. It was written by a bunch of men and edited many of times over hundreds of years.

I'm deeply in love with my black fur Siamese cat. I have sex with her on a daily basis and we connect on a level that transcends human conversation. Our love is pure, genuine, and true. I chose to love her and I want to marry her. Many people mock me and discriminate me believing that animals are not capable of loving humans. But that is only because they refuse to be be open and understanding with them. I often carry sophisticated and loving conversations with my cat. I am sick of being discriminated against as a minority. I want to know why I can't marry my pet who I am deeply in love with. It's not enough to love my pet. We need to legally marry to show how much we love one another and to receive are right dues for being a married couple.

In the state of New Jersey Civil Unions are allowed.

Wikipedia Wrote:On October 25, 2006, the Supreme Court of New Jersey gave New Jersey lawmakers 180 days to rewrite the state's marriage laws, either including same-sex couples or creating a new system of civil unions for them. On December 14 the Legislature passed a bill establishing civil unions in New Jersey, which was signed into law by Governor Jon Corzine on December 21, 2006. The first civil unions took place on February 19, 2007.[38]

There are differences between civil unions and domestic partnerships. In 2004, the state of New Jersey enacted a domestic partnership law, offering certain limited rights and benefits to same-sex and different-sex couples. In 2006, however, after a state Supreme Court ruling that same-sex couples must be extended all the rights and benefits of marriage, the Legislature passed a civil unions law, effective in 2007, which fulfills the court's ruling.

Early fixation hypothesis can be simplified down to additive gene function. For example, when your body needs proteins it has ribosomes that hold DNA in place to form the protein complex. The DNA usually contains repeat sequences that encode for the protein. Therefore the more proteins necessary, the more the DNA sequence has a repeat sequence. Usually in order for survival, the body needs at least a minimum number of functional proteins.

The same theory can be applied possibly towards hormones and the gay hypothesis. The DNA could contain a repeat sequence of too many hormone related compounds that could result in being "gay." Again this probably has a specific quantitative limit as specified by the body so that if it's origin is genetic, then the sexuality can be determined based on analyzing the genome shortly after birth.

As for the second theory which is imprinting / critical period, that theory is absurd and ridiculous. It is psychological and not genetic. To be fair the ratio of heterosexuals to homosexuals if this theory were true should be at least 50% and should have a skew towards homosexuals as the mother is primarily responsible for taking care of the developing child. Therefore it is her traits that the baby should emulate.

I glanced over the last couple of theories because imprinting is such absolute crock that I stopped treating the explanations seriously. I still don't believe that there are gay genes.

I think belief in a gay gene is incredibly silly -- however, I think it's equally silly to think that gayness can be controlled and changed as easily as one's clothes.

You sound crazy with your slippery slope fallacy. Bestiality is Between Man and another type of creature. Gays is Two Same gendered people who want to marry, while being of age and being consentant(This kills pedophilia argument). Now your gonna tell me you wanna marry your sister and im going to tell you that its not the same because, Incest can make pineappleed up babies. If you tell me your gonna marry your pillow well imma tell you its an inanimate object so it cannot consent.
