I've been studying my hiragana and I recently started into Rosetta Stone, but I still know very little.

^ I can interpret some Kanji because it's borrowed from Chinese, and I learned Katakana yesterday. I don't know 10 words in Japanese, but I can kind of read it ._.

Rosetta Stone is pretty bad for learning Eastern languages. I could give you some starting material if you want. RS is only for if you need to practice vocab, really, but even then there are better alternatives.

I never bothered to learn Japanese since I doubt I'll need it. But recognizing common everyday words is something I'd like to pick-up some time in the future. My bestfriend can speak Japanese though, sorta funny, considering he's a Caucasian. We were playing games once, and after he won, he said something in Japanese to me, I'm assuming he was quoting off of Fire Emblem, but I forgot what he said. He was playing Marth, haha.

You can learn Japanese from this?

I read a bunch of reviews on a third-party site, and they overwhelmingly said RS was good for Japanese. Not so good for Thai, I hear.

Personal experience: learning languages via learners doesn't work. You need to practice by talking to people. The only thing you're going to get from a program is basic vocabulary and pomegranate. A program is only about as useful as http://www.yosida.com/en/learning.html

In any case, if any of you are interested in actually learning the Japanese language, I would recommend getting the Adventures in Japanese textbooks AND workbooks. They're what I used throughout high school and they teach it pretty great. Especially if you actually go through the workbooks. With their method of teaching, I usually went through the entire workbooks for each year before the teacher even went through 10% of the material. lol
