MW2 had a terrible story. IW went out of their way to give the game a contemporary setting, and somehow managed to screw it up. If they were aiming for a twisted-reality Fallout kind of game, maybe it would've worked out better, but they set it up as a "what if".
That "what if" is based on the worst kind of soviet-era/communist aggressor tripe and is lacking any historical context from the last 20 years. It is also based on an enemy (and nation) that has never had the capability to do what they suggest. Terrible.

O.o I prefer "What If" over the contemporary "LETS GO KILL IRAQIS" kind of a setting i think youre implying. Just....at least its not as "What If" as Inglorious Basterds..... |
