I do agree with you on that- seeing as I don't know Japanese, I certainly don't know the exact tone the VA is trying to use, or the "message" they're trying to send through it. That doesn't mean I don't have a right to get pissed when they pick horribly illsuited voice actors for one of my favorite shows.

I guess I just prefer it subbed. The Japanese voices are usually better anyway. I don't mind reading either. I have to watch most movies in subtitles due to my poor ears anyway, and those are even in english.

I agree, Dragon Ball Z was dubbed nicely. Same with Yu Yu Hakusho. Other animes that were somewhat silly like Zatch Bell and Rave Masters also had suited dubs in my opinion.

Rave Master & YYH probably had one of the best Japanese2English dubbed-translations I've seen in my life. Yeah, it's weird that I would put Rave Master and YYH together, but I personally thought Rave Master in English was terrific. That was why I was even interested in it in the first place, I started watching the subbed version and finished it off. Thanks to the English dubbing which got my attention in the first place.

YYH, well, I have no words that can describe this. Yusuke's and Hiei's voice actors were fucking unbelievable.

It didn't feel out of character, from the clip I heard, and compared to most dubs the voice pick wasn't too bad. I think I only hear Haruhi, Miku, and Kyon though.

I thought Crispin Freeman did an excellent job as Kyon. I've watch the whole series through in English and Japanese multiple times to try out the different viewing orders and try something new each time, and I must say- he really shines through. He gets the tones, intonation, and all that stuff done right and very well for Kyon's character- something I can pick up so much more easily thanks to it being my own language, but that's not to say I couldn't detect that with Tomokazu Sugita's acting.

Nagato's voice acting in the dub seemed a little too cold and emotionless, and struck me as a bit robotic at times.

Personal preference is the sub, but I'll go to the dub if there's enough good word about it. Meanwhile, prepare for me to upload some of the worst dubs to grace my ears later.

I find English dubs a forced and unnatural way of speech. Japanese voice actors sounds less forced and more fluent in their speeches. With original Japanese, it's unnatural too have character sounds like they do too but there's no real life basis I can compare so it doesn't bother me.

I didn't mention this before, but they took out Tsuruya's two catch phrases of "megas" and "nyoron", and for the better of the dub. They did that instead with a lisp, which is what the whole megas and nyoros stuff was all about, which sounded good and better than something really unnatural like that for me; but trying portraying her as energetic and a bit hyper made the voice actor try too hard for that effect, and it just felt really awkward and unnatural. With Japanese audio, I wouldn't have anything to relate it to, so that's no problem.

Now that you bring that up, anime/Japanese does a lot of use of onomatopoeia as catchphrases. Onomatopoeia is an effective device in literature but more effective in its native language. The sounds works better in Japanese when they speak because of it. English has onomatopoeia respective to English. It would be weird to hear something like "cluck cluck" in Japanese. I can't imagine Ayu from Kanon speaking English and suddenly blurt out "uguu~~" or Makoto whimpering "Auuu".

Also, tsundere doesn't turn out so well in English. I just listened to Kyou's clip in the original post. She sounds like she's going through menopause... or has a stick up her ass. Which is disappointing 'cause she's one of the more unique characters of Clannad.

Excel hada pretty nice dub. She's annoying in both Japanese and English, but English did pretty well with the voices.

Yes, you do, because it's butchering the original work (which may or may not have butchered another piece of work...)

It's not about the translation, and you seem to think that's all it's about. Sometimes the translations are even better than the fan translations (not likely though, considering they have to sometimes mess with phrases so they fit the lip sync).

Bebop had a good dub. Some voices actually seemed to fit the characters more than the original, in my opinion (Jet). Most of the voices seemed to be pretty nice choices.
