Final Fantasy XIII impressions
#1
I'm sure I'm not the only one with the game on SP, right?

Share your impresions, insights, whatever.

I have to say that, the supposedly HORRIBLE "linearity" is not that bad at all, you don't even notice it because of the scenery.

The battle system is really awesome, and the game is difficult too, my Game Over count should be atleast above 15 by now.

Awesome soundtrack? check

The Crystarium system seems to work nicely too.

Overall, it's definitely one of the best games I've played the last few years.

Has any FF game ever had a half-decent battle system? Turn-based with a timer and a pomegranateload of spells you never use has never appealed to me at all. To me, main series FF games are only entertaining if you like the storylines and the graphics (which are pretty damn nice).

Haven't played this FF yet, can't critique it. I've only played 7, 8, and Dissidia. 7 bored the crap out of me. I actually really enjoyed Dissidia, just because it's not an RPG.

Only an hour and a bit in, but all of my impressions will be on my blog.

However, I will say this:

Step, step, battle, step, step, battle, cinema, battle, cinema, save, repeat.

also jesus christ Vanille's voice is annoying. Is that supposed to be an Australian accent? She sounds like she's 5.

Going to go pick it up in about 20 minutes. Seems good from what I read, but not expecting anything to break the holy pomegranate can wide open.

Haven't gotten it yet, will in a few days. From what I have heard from a buddy of mine it's a really good game, and he also agreed that the battle system is great.

It's alright. It's exactly what you expect from a FF game nowadays.

I want to know why so many people complained about the linearity though. Seriously, what the hell? Maybe it's just me, but massively open worlds without any clues of where to go is horrible.

This puzzled me too. They're probably bitching that there's only one way to go to the next event. The maps themselves have enough branches.

The town's thing? lies. There ARE towns, 3 of them. They're just not your traditional towns where you repot etc, you do that at a save point. Instead, these towns are more like dungeons. But still, they're towns.

But yeah, I'm 20 hours in now, Chapter 10.

How about you guys?

Chapter 9's boss was hard as balls. I was stuck there for like 1 and a half hours.

I don't really like Final Fantasy. Although, this game does look really good. I'm sort of short on money now so I'm going to be selective on what games I buy. At this moment, I think Just Cause 2 will be worth $60 over this so I'm going to hold out for that in 2 weeks. I'll probably pick this up for $40 when I find a deal in a week or two.

Also, this isn't getting game of the year.

I finally beat him after 2 hours and 30 minutes, if you count the about 2 hour break after dying for the 17th time.

The main thing I think the japanese we're bitching about is that it's more linear then how FF12 was, which was more of a single player MMO. But, there were many hints at where to go next. That had the ideal design for me.

On the threshold of making everyone a walking MacGuffin. Fun fun.

FF X was as linear as RPGs go, how does it compare to that?

I'm about 8 1/2 hours into the game and my ideas so far:

The Crystarium is absolutely awesome.

The Paradigm Shift function is really helpful in battles since you can't fully control the other players. Being able to switch from attack, to support, to buff at the flick of a switch is very helpful

The linear part doesn't really bother me that much. After reading a few reviews into it, they say that it really helps push you through alot of the main story plot instead of getting sidetracked basically. It doesn't bother me much.

The graphics in the actual gameplay are really nice. I love the cameras in this. They're not too overbearing to move around, but the characters, like when running to a save spot, slide when stopping. Nothing too horrible, just nitpicky.

The cutscenes... I'm completely floored by. Even the intro video made me want to NOT stop playing this game. I really can't get the point out more when I say this.. but the environments are rediculously detailed, and.. yeah. Complete video-gasm.

Voices for the most part are perfect. Sazh's voice really doesn't fit him. And Vanille's voice just bothers me.

How far is everyone? I'm up to where you get Lightning's Eidolon, Odin. And wow, I was sad that I had to go to bed for work in the morning.

I'm at the part where I get Fang's summon. I haven't had time to play that much yet.

That's about 22-23 hours, I think.

Holy pineapple. I need 4k Crystarium Points for each node ._.

Meeks, the sliding thing is intentional. They tried to replicate someone running, then suddenly stopping. When you do that, you make that sliding motion.

I think it also was what was promised and what was delivered.

Does the paradigm level up when you fill up that entire ring? Still in chapter two >_>"

Paradigm is the name of your job set up, not the ring. And no, it levels when you hit "role level" rock things inside the ring. And they don't even seem to do anything. I have no idea what leveling the roles is supposed to do.

What?

But uh, back to Sarah's point, yeah, the Role levels don't seem to do anything, maybe just raise stats for all parameters? I haven't looked. They're kind of expensive too, so there must be a point.

Not worth the money you pay for it. Flashed 360 firmware just to play a pirated version. Decent game led to better discovery as far as I'm concerned.
