2010 Winter Olympics

Jacobellis disappointed me today. She really had the most rotten luck though, it wasn't her fault. I feel bad for her - silver because she screwed up a grab in Torino (and she was like 6-7 seconds ahead of the next person!) and couldn't compete for medals today. ugh.

Figure skating last night was amazing, the two chinese pairs performed very well. A lot of other pairs messed up quite a bit.

I'm gonna spend most of my break watching hockey, curling and snowboarding. Not many of my friends here in the states enjoy winter sports as much as I do - I just got back from a 2 day skiing trip

And as Sarah said, the performer of that was kd Lang (I initially thought it was a guy during the ceremonies till I searched it up, lol). He was so amazing I think I watched her performance a good 2-3 more times after the ceremonies.

It'd be bad if we missed out on the snowboard gold. =\

Just finished watching the Ladies Curling match between Canada and Japan. It was an awesome game, and very nerve racking at the end.

Way to go Canada for coming back from behind in the final end, and winning 7 to 6

I initially watched the opening ceremonies on ctv, but the next day, I couldnt find it anymore (I wanted to rewatch the kd Lang part...that and apparently my uncle was one of the RCMPs with the flag). If I find it, I'll let you know.

@Mike Robertson (Canadian snowboarder who got 2nd): Ive never seen anyone look so disappointed getting silver, haha. Though it was understandable and whatnot, I liked that he was pissed while at the same time classy about it.

That was so sad though. What did he lose by? Half a metre?

VANCOUVER - Former world champion Brian Joubert on Wednesday blamed problems in his private life for his humiliating performance in the men's figure skating short programme in Vancouver.

Touted as among the gold medal favourites to challenge the likes of defending champion Evgeni Plushenko, the 2007 world champion fell during his routine and is now out of the medals in 18th ahead of the free skate.

"My problems come from outside the ice rink, from my personal life. I lost a lot of energy outside the ice rink," explained the 25-year-old.

"I have to change some things in my attitude. The last two years, my attitude hasn't been the way it should be."

"I'm not the same person any more. I'm not myself."

"I knew that (things weren't the way they should be) but I didn't react accordingly. I know what I have to do but it is not easy. It wasn't a good moment (to realise what was wrong)."

And the three-time European champion said he was reconsidering his future.

"Figure skating is, alongside my family obviously, the most important thing in my life," he said.

"I've committed myself to 2012 (world championships in France). I want to win the Cup of China so that I've won all of them (Grand Prix).

"I want to end my career on a high note, with another world championship title and a European title."

The three-time Olympian added: "It's another disappointment at the Olympic Games. These Games have beat me."

I've never been a fan of the Olympics. Maybe it's because I read Greek Mythology at the age of 4, but I never really "got" the concept.

In ancient Greece strength and beauty justified themselves. The gods were anthropomorthic, so because they were ultra strong and beautiful they did really bad things to mortals and each other, (ranging from cheating on each other to rape to murder and torture,) but they were the divine authority because if anyone defied them, they'd kill them in a horrible manner. In the Iliad and the Odyssey, the strong take what they want, and kill whom they want, and because they can kill anybody they're "heroes." "Heroism" is not a function of ethics, just of strength. Odysseus in particular repels me because he took 1/2 of the men from his kingdom to Troy, (they all died,) and then he came back and killed the other 1/2 because they were partying in his house. The parents formed a posse to go kick his ass, and then Athena comes down and says "that's enough, Odysseus is the greatest hero EVAR, so he'll be your king." As for what caused the Iliad, it was a woman that was HAHWT so she ran away from her husband with another guy. The husband then took his posse to Troy to reclaim his property. If you read between the lines, when they take Troy and kill, pillage and rape everything and everyone, the husband nearly kills the super-hawt woman and is stopped from doing so by his men. So it wasn't really about taking the woman back, it was about murder, rape and pillage. For those out there bashing the Old and New Testaments, THIS is what was considered the epitome of civilization before the Bible.

Yeah, the ancient Greeks REALLY gave all of us something to aspire to. So every 4 years now we have people that are really strong beat everybody else and get medals because they're stronger and better. Then the Olympics end and we stop giving a $hit about them until the next Olympics roll around.

Wow, I didn't expect Plushenko to lose at all tonight... I was disappointed.

On a happier note, the Mens Canadian team beat Sweden pretty badly at Curling this morning

And the Mens Hockey game (Canada vs. Switzerland) was pretty nerve racking at the end... but luckily we won~

Yay, Canada lost to the States at men's hockey. Now we can see Luongo against Germany's 33% penalty kill, lol.

Seems like this weekend's been quite the misfortunate one for our athletes. Our figure skater Rochette losing a mother before competing and our women's long track Britney Schussler running into technical difficulties minutes before a competition..

I can't imagine what it must've been like to lose a loved one just before a competition. Hope she pulls through - both in the competition and in the healing process.

Yeah, I feel terrible for Joannie Rochette. I hope that motivates her to do better than before although her competitors from Japan and Korea won't make it easy.

Same - but then usa and canada both are very good teams in terms of hockey.

Rochette placed 3rd. I almost thought with the media insensitively publicizing and bombarding her with "attention", it might've hit her too hard for her to handle but she pulled through - what a trooper.

Kim Yu-Na's a beast. She broke the world record by a good 18 points.

Just curious what you guys think, but with the games in Vancouver, those Vancouver people are talking about their goal to win the most medals. However, the "Official" Olympic medal count (according to Wiki) looks at gold only, with silver as a tiebreaker, and bronze as a tiebreaker beyond that.

However, I wonder why the organizers see it as a race for total medals, as they made an announcement half a week ago about the impossibility of catching the US but hopefully catching Germany.

Which is the "correct" medal counting format? If it is indeed simply just golds, then Canada is tied with the US/Germany there already, and simply need to win more gold medals (It'll be hard to catch Germany/US in total medals, as after all, Germany is still 7 ahead). With all that in mind, I like Canada's chances, as they're favorites for at least 3 more gold medals (Men/Women's curling, Men's hockey), least that's the way I see it.
