Can anyone vouch for this laptop?
#1
So, about 3 weeks ago my laptop died. I'm pretty sure it's graphics adapter failure, so I'm now hunting for a new laptop. I've stumbled upon the Lenono Ideapad Y450, but it just seems too perfect. It's a 14 inch laptop with an Nvidia 240M GT in it with a 2.53 GHz duo core for 850$ (820 with a student discount). My question is, has anyone ever seen this laptop or know someone who has bought it? It just seems too good to be true to be honest, like my last laptop ended up being. My biggest worry is just that it will end up constantly overheating like my previous one and end up having the same fate. I have heard good things about Lenovo though, and know someone who has a gaming laptop from them and has no problems with it, but his is a 17 inch model which I have vowed to never get another 17 inch.

I recommend getting a Toshiba, I have one from a few years back and it still works. Despite it looking like this: http://i48.tinypic.com/5y23k.jpg

This seems to be a better deal.

Wow a-@ my 17 inch Toshiba is in better shape. Did yours start to have an issue with the screen blacking out in one of the bottom corners?

Also, Toshiba are pretty durable, but id go check Newegg.com for some laptops, I always find good laptops, and the reviews are great help.

I find the reviews on newegg to be a bit baised because most people who write reviews are people who have only used the item they reviewed for about 1 week. It's only been 1 week, of course the laptop would be running great. I also don't like newegg's no return policy. I prefer laptop forums over newegg reviews. I am currently using an Asus EeePC and it's been fine so far (but I've only had it for about one month). For my desktop, it uses an Asus motherboard so that has lasted... years and years. I don't even remember how long, 3+ years at least.

I've also read some good things about Asus laptops which is why I went with Asus. It's something that's not to expensive but not too cheap.

Ive seen some reviews for people who have had it longer than a week, but yea, alot are initial reviews of people who barely had it.

Lenovo bought the notebook division from IBM some years ago, if you were wondering about the name Lenovo or the quality of their products. Wink

Anyway, always go see the laptop you want in a shop up and running, and also compare it to some others besides it.

Current day's laptops are all the same internal wise, the only point where they differ is:
- Quality of the screen (Is the screen reflecting and shiny or do you want a matte one?)
- Toughness of body / screen (does it starts breaking after 1 year?)
- Battery life
- Does it get hot if you full load both the CPU + GPU for a while?
- Is it noisy at full load / idle? -> listen carefully, most stores are a lot more noisy then when you're at home in a quiet room!

The quality isn't the same for their consumer products. Yes, the build quality for ThinkPads are the same, but they're mainly aimed towards businesses.

Yeah ok, that's true, that's why you always should go check a up-and-running laptop in a store nearby! Smile

No, I just wanted to take it apart, because the heatsink/fan assembly was not easily accessible and the laptop was feeling warm at times. Turns out, there was about half a inch of dust stuck between the heatsink and blower.
