Need help with a question about kernels

My girlfriend and I have been struggling with a question on one of her assignments all day long. Which is:

17. Consider the following services and classify them as taking place in the kernel or outside the kernel. Do this for both microkernel and hybrid kernel systems.
a. Opening and closing files
b. Writing to a register
c. Reading a memory cell
d. Receiving a text message
e. Playing a sound bite

We've only been able to solve three of them, but we're not 100% sure if they're right. If anyone of you guys can help us out, we'll appreciate it. If not, then tell a joke. : )
