I don't really like the iPad.

Lets List:
Pros:
Big Screen
Shiny
Relatively long battery life (Yes guys, it does) (10 hours or something like that, but, knowing apple, thats at minimal usage)

Jobs said in the keynote "you could take a flight from here and here and watch movies along the way and still have charge".

Watching movies is pretty heavy usage on any apple products battery.

You forgot the no contract thing too.

Laptops are cheaper than iPads...my friend got a netbook for 350 recently, for example.

Because Apple only wants developers using their APIs in order to maintain complete iron wall control over their hardware and software.
The reason this is fucking stupid? Well, you already paid hundreds more than the thing is worth (any Apple product) and therefore you should have the ability to do what you want with it. They don't give a pomegranate if you break it, yet they won't let you choose to run Flash on it if you want.

...Wow. FFS, Apple. Fail.

I've did some reading on that Alienware "Netbook". Spend the extra $200 and get that instead of some pineappleing iPad.

Most likely something better. Should, for that price. I don't know if even an Atom N280 would work well with the other hardware.

Anywho, I always saw Alienware as the Apple of PCs with their prices. But it's a nice idea. Too thick/heavy for my tastes. Would put the money towards a new full size desktop.

iPad...shouldn't get a tablet label as much as it just being an advanced reader of sorts.



Starting from $699 you can get a Axiotron: Modbook but meh...I'm not really one for Macs anyways...

My weapon of Choice is rebuilt Fujitsu Stylistics since I can get the parts on Ebay and other sites easily.


I can't see any real practical use for the iPad...Small harddrives and no USB ports rule it out as an art tool...WIRELESS THROUGH AT&T. I'm going to assume the screen isn't pressure sensitive either and they probably are using their own digitizer technology and not Wacom or anything.

Can the iPad run Crysis?

This is false. A modbook is $699 plus the cost of a Macbook, so it comes up to $1800~ with labour.

Why would a consumer want to lug around something so heavy as a laptop when they could have the iPad instead? Most users don't play Crysis on max, they want something portable, small, lightweight and easy to use to check email, surf the web, read some news articles, watch videos and maybe even write a few things on.

I have a laptop and I don't use it as a laptop anymore, it's too inconvenient. Putting it on your lap sucks, you can't stand and walk around using it, you can't really do much besides sit down and use it. I use it as a desktop, I hook it up to a monitor either at work or at home.

When I get an iPad, I'll be able to use this instead as a better laptop, something you don't have to sit down to use, something you can use pretty much anywhere (while you're commuting, etc).

Sure, I have an iPhone, but with the bigger screen and applications built specifically for the iPad, it's going to be awesome.

Flash is outdated and useless technology. HTML 5 does everything Flash does, but better. More sites need to make the switch, as YouTube has already done. Besides the point, the reason Apple doesn't have Flash is obviously politics as Adobe vs Apple has never been a friendly relationship.

The 3G is not $830. It's $629. It's marketed towards the consumer, not the high-tech user like most users on forums.

The SD Card Adapter is $30, not $60.

You don't need the wall dock / case / keyboard dock. You make it sound as if Desktops and Laptops don't have cases and accessories.

That being said, I wasn't as impressed with it as I had hoped to be, due to the hype. The iPad is a cool thing, the 2nd generation will no doubt be more amazing and something more people will pickup. Lack of a camera was disappointing.

Typing on the iPad will in no way be fast compared to a netbook.

Playing Videos/Movies on the iPad requires conversion instead of drag and drop play on a netbook.

iWork will cost ya, anything Apple doesn't want you to have, you won't have.

The accessories are over priced compared to similar things for a netbook/pc.

iWork is a waste of money unless you own a Mac and do presentations regularly, because there's no way you can be productive on that thing.

The iPad's specs makes it more comparable to a smartphone.

HTML5 video still requires the device to be able to decode multiple types of video, iPad currently can't.

the iPad should have had a built in camera, even if it only works in one orientation.

All you're going to do on it is type or casually browse the internet, you may as well get something like the iPad.

You're comparing an iPad to netbook, so typing speed would be a valid comparison.

Converting movies takes time, wouldn't it more convenient to just drag and drop? "Purchased via iTunes" = more money.

Keyboard costs: $70, "case" costs $40, SD/USB kit $30, VGA out $30, total of $130 without case. All of which come with a netbook (some even come with a case) and are nicely integrated into the device. You'd have to juggle those accessories along with the iPad.

iWork is $10, still adds to the price.

Being "able" to play videos using HTML5 doens't mean anything. Videos probably have to be optimized for the iPad.

Doing anything that involves typing on the iPad would cause problems. You probably would get ~30wpm if you're lucky. Instant messaging, IRC, posting on forums would be a pain. Netbooks are useful say if I'm at the library and want to chat with friends, take notes during lectures, They're definitely fast enough for programming.

iPad = $499 + iWork, keyboard, iWork, SD/USB, VGA = $640 + Camera, iTunes purchases.
Asus EEE (1005HE) = $280-$340 depending on specs. Weighs about 600g more than the iPad, few cms thicker, less than half the price of an iPad.
