Anyone can file a complaint on any business with them. If the business subscribes to the BBB (which most don't, including major corporations like wal-mart and target), then the business can refute the claims and the BBB will take them down. If not, then the BBB lowers an arbitrary "grade" for the company and posts the complaint. That's it. It's pretty much Customer Service Blackmail.
I think the main focus is just to get Nexon's attention. We know from past experiences that Nexon does take their BBB rating seriously and typically provides swift responses in order to clear things up. It's even been joked about that the BBB site is Nexon's real ticketing system.
I don't think anyone expects outside action from logging BBB complaints, rather they want to provoke Nexon into action by doing something they will pay attention to.

I think the real problem right now is that we don't know.
We are only able to speculate on how this is happening -- which leads to a lot of different theories on how to make your account secure.
The only thing that's 100% secure right now is leaving your account logged in 24/7 or locking all your items. The rest is just speculation.

I know Prose said he had a Ice Mage. I wonder if that got hacked and he was still at Nexon would that raise alarms lol.

Combattente could always ask him via facebook if his has been hacked too.

Kawasari Mimoto Wrote:I recall someone saying they changed their pass a couple days 'ago' before their hacking. Hard to say though. Personally, I changed my password last week, but I am fine for now. I don't know when I'll get hacked, but I think it might be inevitable. Most you can do is 'attempt' by changing passwords every couple of days. I have an account with a high levelled Bishop, but since I don't use her much, I stripped her clean, so that's the only account I'm not too worried about.
Im still going with my theory that they got their hands on some old infos somehow. Thing is, just because there's this hacking pandemic going on, it doesnt mean that ALL the accounts getting hacked are because of the pandemic. You have to remember that before this hacking craze, people still got hacked, though through sharing of information, keylogging, etc.
The trend I've noticed in those Q&A threads is that almost all except 2-3 people who have gotten hacked have not changed their info within the last few months. Also consider this: While I do not think that I know how these hackers think, with the number of account infos they have, if even the pin is changed, they'd probably just move on. Sure, they can bypass your pin by manually bruteforcing it or something, but in that amount of time, they could probably have gone through another bunch of accounts. I'll say this, and if comes back to bite me in the ass, sure, but I feel safe with all my pins changed. For myself, I feel comfortable with that level of security, and I go with that.
In the end, its all a matter of self-comfort. Worrying about it isnt going to decrease or increase your chance of getting hacked, and considering how many accounts exist, the odds of getting hacked are somewhat low (though some people here have obviously proved me wrong). If changing your password makes you feel safe, go for it. If changing your pin makes you feel safe, by all means, do it. If moving all your equips off into a newly created account makes you feel safe, then do that.
In the end, everything that's said here about how people are getting hacked is hypothesized. There's no proof of anything, and anything can be proven wrong at any moment. Till you know how it truly works, you have no way of 100% preventing it (and even if you know it, you STILL might not be able to 100% prevent it). Just take a look at what's been happening, analyze it, and try to safeguard against it. There's really not much else you can do.

I really wouldn't put any trust in the PIN system. It's the first security feature to go when hackers attack, because it's by far less secure than anything else.

I haven't changed anything since day one, no change in my account, yet. Don't really care now, seeing how this game is going down the toilet quite fast.
Let's see how long my characters can last clothed.

I have been doing a bit of checking and it seems all the people i have contacted so far in bello who were hacked all registerd their accounts between july and oct 2007. Two of the people who were hacked on the same day also reported having the exact same date for their maple island quest beinging completed. These people do not know eachother and i trust them to provide accurate information.

Maybe this is just coincidental?
My account was created 8/31/2007. Can provide SS if need be.

There has been a patch and a server check. Has anyone been hacked from the patch to now? I'm considering unlocking my account for ease of access, but I don't have peace at mind if I do that.

i've heard of accounts being drained since the patch, not since the SC, though i doubt its cause they stopped (haven't been on ms much since the SC)

You might be onto something, since one of my maple friends and I created our accounts on the same day and were compromised on the same day. But it doesn't explain the randomness to the hackings though, if the hackers were going by creation date. Also wouldn't make sense why the hacker would take a tour on one of my friend's account and my account, which weren't created on the same day and had valuables, but completely clean out my other friend made on the same day.
Maybe (warning: unproven hyphothesis, read with a grain of salt) if there were a database where the hackers were getting their information from, they could be picking segments to try to look random on purpose. But that would only work if they truly did have access to a database list, which has yet to be proven.

Or just stating my 2 cents here:
Different hackers doing different hackings from a common ....source, hence the randomness. Maybe after a hacker or hackers got... stuff from nexon, they split the accounts name and divide it among themselves. i think getting a whole list of whatever of one of the most popular MMO games is kinda a big pot of loot that is too much for one dude to hack.
Also.. efficency.
As for those hacked after a certain period, maybe its 'normal' hacking business.

No, we do not want you to equip them. No, they are not all banned. Those are just a small amount of the tens of thousands of accountinfo.'s we have of everyone. Thank Nexon for terrible security, this iswhy people are getting hacked recently.
If furtherjustification is requested, we will throw down more account info.'s.There are tens of thousands more where that came from.

Now we can say this is all pomegranate talk and that it has no value, however anyone in bera, especially since 2006 woudl know who these people are. They are no joke, armand and richard are goonies for mike and dan. Mike and dan have the capability to do this. These players also play khaini, which i currently play. I've been in their vent channel, and evidently had some friend witness Dan/Mike send spreadsheets to Armand/Richard talking it out on vent. I can't name names, I don't want drama.
I left bera because of these certain players, I get into their inner circle to avoid being in jeopardy myself, as they begin to backstab eachother within this inner circle I left. From what my sources told me, who are still in their inner circle, dan had an access code to the information, which he recently lost during the .8 patch. He still has information up to the .8. So its safest to change your information, a simple pass change anyway.
You can take my word for it, as I take my friends word for it, as I did test him by asking him the vent information, which I no longer have the pass but I do have the 'server name'. Or you don't, that's my knowledge on the situation as of now.

These are all old beran players who are notorious for these types of acts. Armand/Richard are pretty much mike's/dan's dog's who do the work for them while they create the bypasses and actual coding. Some of these players evidently play in the server I play in. I left bera to avoid these players because I joined their inner circle, then they started backstabbing the very people they talked to everyday for personal gain, and I ran. Now, my friend in Khaini is in the spot I was 2 years ago, I tested such by asking what their vent server was, which was right. He evidently witnessed the exchange of account infos among the 4 of them, checking through thousands and thousands of accounts through the maple site.
Take it or leave it, this is what I know. Apparently dan lost access to these codes during the latest patch so he no longer can get any account info's past the .8 patch.

Friend just got hacked. Was gone for two weeks on a break and found her character empty and in FM 1. Everything but her mount was gone. I can't promise that it wasn't a keylogger, but the only maple site they frequent is Basil for auctions. They also have AVG firewall protection and malwarebytes and spyware blaster, which should find and block keyloggers anyway. So it sucks, but the sad thing is that she really didn't even have a lot of stuff worth money. Like maybe...30 mil at most aside from a scarlion helmet.
Crappiness aside, there's another possibility in mind, albeit the obvious. It could be on basil. They've had bots making threads with links to redirecting phishing sites that look exactly like basil, until they were stopped. But if that was done so easily, I bet a keylogger could be too.

That disregards the sheer number of us who don't go to basil.

Whatttt...?
I checked my thief today on the rankings, and she didn't have her '06 White Maple Bandana. I signed on Maple, and I found out I got hacked.

This is getting ridiculous.

To those that keep on spectulating phishing, cross-scripting, trojan, malware, or something of that sort, I can assure you it's not the case. I tie a lot of information to forums in regards to my main account, and absolutely none on my mule account. If that was the point of entry, it does not make any sense that none of my main accounts have been compromised (as of date) which harbour way more valuables than my affected mule. I've also had a shared mule that was mysteriously pin changed (password and email non-compromised) sometime during December. The account was made around last March so it's not just that who created their accounts in 2007 are affected. The only downfall of the mule was the password, which I admit was obliviously weak and I had plans to change it too but never did due to not being affected in years, and that's what I believe is keeping my other accounts safe by delaying successful brute force.
For those who like to argue that hackers don't waste time on hacking maple accounts, well you're wrong. I've said it several times maple is a gold mine for virtual items, due to the current lack of security. I never follow RMT (real-money trading) but I bet if some of you do, mesos and items for real money are dropping because of this. Botters may not even seem profitable anymore, they probably have dedicated machines cracking the hashes or whatever they're bypassing/deciphering. If MSEA and GMS use the same protocols, it's even easier for those hackers in MSEA to use the same methodology over here, which saves them from starting from scratch and earn them profit from day 1. All I'm saying, there's a huge motive for them and it's not something that should be overlooked easily.
