Little known fact - 90% of what goes in a ToS has no legal basis and can not stand up in court. It's there to discourage the attempt.
If you think you're bound by a set of rules you agreed to you are less likely to challenge them. It's all psychological.
A ToS can not define or amend law, they're bound by it and within it, and superceded by the law when they conflict.
I can write a ToS that says you agree to be my slave for life, get you to sign it in blood with 20 witnesses and a notary and it still has no binding value because it violates both state and federal law. This is one of the first things a business law, especially an internet law class, will teach you regarding contracts.

Just so you all know, I will keep you updated on my outside actions regarding this issue but all dealings I have with any contacts will be considered confidential and out of respect for that I will not be copy-pasting entire conversations.

Dissent is part of our culture. I don't need to be compensated, since the idiot hacker that was on my account didn't take anything. Whatever Nexon decides on their end for compensation is entirely up to them, and won't affect me either way.
However, we shouldn't be treated like our opinions don't count, especially when we're aren't even asking for anything more than for Nexon to acknowledge that this situation is real.
You took a chance by opening up this thread, knowing that Fiel tries to keep hacking discussions to a minimum. You knew something was wrong, and in spite of the discouragement, posted because you needed answers to know you weren't going crazy. This thread has so far been our only way to make any sense out of what is going on.
When I first read it, I thought you were just another player not being careful with your account, and dismissed it as such until the same thing happened to me. There will be more and more players getting compromised until Nexon does something.
I don't even care if they even just put up an official notice saying exactly what Sarah said before, that Nexon is aware of the situation, is looking into it, and here are some guidelines to safeguard your account until a more permanent solution can be found, with procedures for tickets so they can catalog the victims. That simple notice could easily help prevent more victims from being compromised like we were, instead of splitting up the community between the believers and the naysayers. And meanwhile, the hackers are operating without any restrictions.
And I'm really hoping that -Hime- was exaggerating or misinformed about how she said the personnel information is on the same database as our accounts, because a hijacked GM or administrator account is easily the worst case scenario. Remember in The Matrix Revolution when Smith ended up hijacking everybody in the Matrix?
We're not trying to have a revolution against Nexon, merely a reformation.

She was referring to the database as a whole, which is true - Somewhere in there all that is kept. Doesn't mean that just because the hackers didn't find it they don't have access to it, or that they're not in there, it just means they are constrained to the portion of the database they're aware. The structure of the maple specific database was made public in the BMS leaks. Getting data out of there "blind" is easy, because we already know what it contains. Not knowing what else is in there, and not knowing the names of the subdatabases, or not having access to an account that can access those subdatabases, could all be limiting factors protecting that area.
So yes, her statement was a mixed truth. She's not a DBA. She made some assumptions that aren't reflective of probable reality.

Playing Maple Story for the last two and a half years I get the impression they are alot more "Mom and Pop" store than their financial success would indicate.
1 - They used to repeatedly put up announcements that were clearly written by someone who used English as a second language. Besides blatant spelling mistakes they made common grammer mistakes that you wouldn't see from a third grader simply because our verb noun structure is different than whatever their native tongue is.
2 - I have heard bad reports about their customer service, never used it myself. Why? Because when I had a problem and went to the website the report form errored out every single time I tried to submit it. Shows a great lack of professionalism.
3 - Have you seen their ads? Seriously. Who creates that crap? I couldn't think of a worse way to market a product. It just goes to further show they are a bit out of touch with what they should really be doing. Its like their product is success in spite of their best attempts to sabotage it.
4 - Huge problem curbing the hacking epidemic. Horn Tail was getting owned on a regular basis and all of us honest people thought those hackers were taking a real risk. When the reality of the situation was the keystone kops go home at 5 pm pst or whenever and the hackers can do whatever they want after that. I know they eventually got this figured out, but to find out that security really was that lax, I mean its one map on one channel and they weren't even able to police that? It just shows their back end isn't together and they tend to deal with issues once it becomes a serious problem. For example the hacking was finally solved after being a problem for quite some time.
These different glimpses to what Nexon has done in the past leads me to suspect that they don't quite have everything together. Believe what you want about the hacking epidemic, but I personally know too many people like Eos. People that know plenty about computers, how to protect their computer, and how to find a virus if they were hacked. These people have been getting jacked left and right, one I can see, but its getting to be more and more and more. Several friends have quit because they were hacked. Its obvious there is a problem and then it needs fixed.

The only way you could call nexon "Mom & Pop" is in their size. They try to keep their profits up by having as few people as possible on the payroll, so they have people doing 4 or 5 jobs that most professional companies would hire separate people to do. The people they hire hardly seem qualified for one of these jobs, let alone all of them, so of course it's done inadequately. You can't hire a programmer with a basic knowledge of Korean and expect him to give you good translations. It's way outside his expertise and he doesn't know enough to do a decent job translating it. When you're forcing them to do 3 or 4 jobs they don't even like, it's hard for them to care about doing it well. That's why the times for patches and such are always so badly converted for time zones - they don't even care enough to go online and find a site to convert it for them.
If they really wanted to do better, it'd be as simple as hiring more people, people with single dedicated jobs instead of being GM+Customer Service+ Programmer.

I believe you're mistaken. They have distinct roles & responsibilities as far as programmers and GM's go.
They have dedicated roles for web developers, database programmers, security and program development in fact.

I'm.. gonna have to agree with you here. It's impossible to have a single person do a bit of everything. They have each person have a specific task, for example if they got a call from someone, they'll try to resolve it at Level 1 HelpDesk, if they can't resolve it, they transfer up to higher levels. In worse cases, upper management. I doubt they only have like a couple people working and multi-tasking. That'd be a sh'tty job...

If you're submitting your tickets as feedback that's an instant-close category.

At this point, i wouldn't mind if nexon added a fourth requirement to log on (ID, PW, PIN, ____?)

It's not like Nexon had officially said you won't be uncompensated. You guys seem to be too quick to jumping the gun. You may say that this will bring more attention and perhaps hasten the investigation to avoid media and legal attention on Nexon's part, but I think it's bad provocation.
I say Nexon can use a little provocation right about now. I dont think at this point much of us care about being compensated. The customers get silenced at every turn. Our tickets are given automated answers, and Hime and her minions silence anyone who speaks out against Nexon. We're simply bringing in the media, something Nexonw will find far more difficult to silence. I think current and potential customers deserve to know whats going on. I quit this game not because I got hacked nor because I got too tired of being DC hacked, but because I can do without the fear. I can do without the fear of wondering whether or not my corsair will still have cloths on its back and a gun in it's hand the next time I log in. You know this game has gone to pineapples when fearing for your account's safety becomes a daily occurence. I dont think anyone deserves to be put through that, and that is why we're getting as much media attention on this issue as possible. It's not about the compensation anymore. It's about being able to hold a negligent company responsible for their actions.

Incidentally this would provide absolutely zero additional protection if the current problem involves them being able to bypass the login servers. Authenticators would be nice if not for that flaw.

I approve of the current direction of this thread. A few of you guys obviously have contacts that many others do not. Almost seems like a battle we cannot win, but if it happens, those are always the most vindicating.
Cant believe they are banning for well written non-trolling posts on their forums because they don't like people point out what is happening. I never have gone to that cess pool of a forum myself but unless something offensive was omitted from those posts, they read very well and to close/ban people for that is downright horrifying.
If the compensation that nexon decides to give is their normal bout of x2 (if anything ever happens at all), they will have the confirmation of most people who have been hacked, quit forever. No amount of x2 or x6 for that matter would want to make me come back. The only thing would be the unlikely restoration of my account backdating to the day before I was hacked. That would create duplicate items, but from what I hear the economy is getting worse with every hacking and cheap reselling. Not like Nexon doesn't break the game with overpowered nx/event items every patch as it is.
For the record, I submitted my ticket under Website -> Downtime, so I assume it was actually read after 9 days then "escalated" This was before most people were hacked. Should be easier to force a non closable ticket into the system now. Just make sure to include as much account detail of what happened and what was lost. My ticket is still open after 40 days.

Is there any evidence that that is what they are doing? Because if it is, there is pretty much nothing that we can do to prevent it. The unuseable password idea would not help, and i believe neither would getting yourself banned, as some on the Nexon forums are now considering. The only thing left is staying logged on 24/7, and that is not practical for everyone. Who knows, even that might not stop them. There could be interesting database confusion if two instances of the same account were active at once.

I haven't been hacked, however I did get a hold of all the accounts that the guy posted on sleepywood and here and there seems to be around 200+ he posted...Well I check around 80 of them on the site and in game. Not one of them pins worked...You may think "well someone checked them before you and changed the pin" well if that was true the accounts that I actually tried and seen would have bee stripped when in deed they were not. Some would have Z-Helms, Maple Weapons, etc Someone would have at least took them or even dropped them if they were indeed "hacked".
Not only that but out of the 80 I checked around 60 of them were Rookies and been banned and about 25-35 were Perm-Banned. None of them had any Nexon clothes/Hair but 1.
If you got looking around these old hacking forums you can find TONS of accounts just like these have been give out scammed in a trade/sell or even quit. Or Keyloggers, etc.
I think this is all fake about the Data-Base being actually hacked but people have been Keylogged of some sort or use an E-Mail/Password/User-name at the wrong forum/site.
If the Data-Base was hacked TONS of are level 200s when have been stripped by now.

There have been level 200s who have been hacked in this wave of accounts compromisings.

Not necessarily. Just because they have the info to accounts doesn't mean they know who's info belongs to who. I've said it like 5 times in this thread, if they have thousands of people's information, they have to just pick and choose and hope they get someone with money/equips or a lvl 200, hence some people's mules being hacked and not their mains. And one of my guildies was hacked yesterday, she uses NO forums and no websites such as MySpace or Facebook, and she rarely logs in.

Historical precedent - It's what they did to HeroTex. That may have been patched, but that version of it required the victim to be online. Finding a way to do it with an offline target isn't impossible.
There are only two ways to get into an account - Using the pass and PIN, or bypassing the pass and PIN. Only Nexon can tell what was actually done, there'd be absolutely no evidence otherwise, except for the obvious fact of my pass and pin having never been spoken, written or otherwise recorded outside of their DB.
When someone wants to claim credit for having taken the entire DB but gives fairly lame evidence about it and is really a mostly poser group anyway I tend to suspect distraction and or lying to be involved.

i could smell a class action suit if this continues. i see the arguments on the Nexon site forum of the logic of "well as more ppl make accounts, more ppl get hacked-duh"....well as far as i know, in the past YEAR, only one friend was "hacked"-and that was thru being an idiot in their own right. I also had one friend lose items due to shared info.
Now I have FIFTEEN people on my buddylist that have been hit (albeit mostly on mules or older secondary accounts, and I see people in my server that I may not know but are steadily being hacked--old time players as well. Regardless of being children/idiots/whtever, none of these people strike me as being anything other than careful adult maplers...definitely not 100% of them all lying at once and dropping like flies.
I can definitely see a class action suit brought up to almost make an example out of Nexon for the entire gaming card industry. the suit would of course apply to NX-losses only--remember we can access on-site records of MTS transactions so Nexon also has these as well--so if you didnt lose raw cash, but lose say-a weapon or overall purchased via MTS NX cash-then that qualifies as well. The whole virtual online credit industry is a ginormous industry growing at an insane rate each year--to the point where virtual credit may one day overtake traditional giftcards. i'm sure some firm would love to make Nexon the giant industry fall-guy, not to mention the huge hubbub people love to make over online identity security and the fact that 2009 was an all time high for illegal immigrants stealing children's names to gain employment/credit/loans/insurance/AND HEALTHCARE. (i'll find source for this as i just read the article at work this week on our intra-net site-was healthcare related for my industry)
More than anything a lack of communication is a HUGE problem that should have been addressed at the beginning of december. I'm a lil ticked off that i have to keep mules on my accounts logged in 24/7 when i havent even been playing maple for the past 3-4 months, not to mention the 34$ i spent on year-long item locks that should be FREE. (and cost NX to remove)
