What Good does Prison do?

Personally, I disagree with putting people in prison for drugs, assault, and pretty much anything else. Good to know that they're off the streets, but our tax dollars go to building more prisons to prevent overcrowding.

The only solution I'd see fit is to make the current penalties for some crimes more harsh, such as a death/life sentence without parole for rapists, or repeat offenders.

If I could have it my way, there would be less tax dollars spent on enlarging and building new prisons if prisoners would just...die.

Life sentence without parole sounds like justice when the jury is listening to what he did -- perhaps murder 10 people or something.

What life sentence without parole in practice means is that the perp grows old being provided 3 squares a day, clothing, and shelter. As he becomes increasingly old, the state has a duty to provide him with free medical attention. As most people will tell you, medical attention is not cheap. Therefore, life sentence without parole in practical terms means that some 90 year old perp is being provided for, for the precise reason that he killed like 10 people. Many people who do not commit crimes have to go without medical attention, though I would say they deserve it more than the 90 year old perp.

That, and a 90 year old perp is no longer a violent offender. It is fairly rare for a 90 year old man to commit violent crime, even if he did a lot of it in his youth.

The long and short of it is that the firing squad or lethal injection is far more humane on society, if not for the perp.

Maybe they'll learn something? I think a program that actually gets it through their heads what they did was wrong would work much better.
Obviously if they are in an unstable mental-phase, letting them walk around without restraint would be hazardous, but locking them away won't solve anything.


I'm sure they do. That's their problem. If they want to take illegal action on the criminal, they're immature hypocrites.

You are talking about rehab as if every killer has problems. What about the ones that only kill in purpose, or violate people deliberately. You might say just doing that is having problems, but rehab is not going to help them because they were conscious of what they were doing.

So I believe jail time is right as it is and should not lower any more, lets just see it as a temptation the criminals should take into consideration before commiting crime. But, if they do know whats coming after they commit crime, I guess they just don't mind having those years in prison.

Good question, sometimes prison don't seem to help at all and once criminals get out of prison people just go back to their old bad things they used to do. But yeah sometimes when people are in prison they don't really experience it as a real punishment over here in The Netherlands, cause sometimes prison here can be like a 4 star hotel O.o

You do the crime, you do the time..:f6: The law doesn't care about your family, friends, if you're still in middle/high school. You break the law there's consequences, simple as that. No pitty party. Just the other day a 12 year old attempted to rob a walgreens with a very realistic looking gun(it was a bb gun) and the clerk called the cops. The kid is now in a juvenile detention center, and more than likely be charged with a felony. I would want justice to be served if something were to happen to any of my family members by some pedo/rapist/murderer.. wouldn't u? Yeah granted some people don't change when they go to prison & get out, they just revert back to their old ways and get jammed right back in the same cell they just left("once a jail bird, always a jail bird"), but some do. And some well..are on death row...soo..there's no help for them anyways..

How does prison help drug crimes? It might be ok for the more violent crimes but I don't see how putting a drug user or dealer in prison solves anything. Someone else will fill their niche in the supply chain. When 1/5 of prisoners in america are in for drug related offenses, it's definitely something that needs to be considered.

If they're in for that reason it's because they were caught using or selling, not for commiting a crime under the influence of drugs. I don't see how using drugs hurts anyone except maybe yourself, and unless they're using illegal sales tactics then the other shouldn't be a crime either.
