If you macro it unfortunately it'll activate sometimes when you don't want it to. Just holding down the key makes step go as soon as it can as long as you're walking in a straight line.

I just wish they'd remove the double-tapping trigger. <_<

Then they should let us put skills on keys for double tapping trigger.

After reading about the Combat Step macro, I decided not put it once, but three times in a macro. If you're just walking around, and activate this while walking (otherwise you cancel the macro) and you go forward pretty fast. It also activates a little faster than just one on a macro, and I personnaly think it goes pretty smooth, unlike when you're constantly double tapping.

I use jump plus combat step.... it works well without making me look like a spastic seizure victim

I find the skill very useful. If you time everything well, you can juggle a combo very nicely with it. II can time it in a way where I combo step the instance I finish one mob so I can move to the closest mob and continue attacking. Or, in some cases, using combo step to close the distance between you and the monster.
Of course, it's also very useful on maps with ledges. For instance, in evil eye cave, it was very useful for me. I was able to drop down ledges faster than if I used Jump+down.

I really don't understand how people have problems with double tapping...hotkey the skill and never double tap (except when turning around immediately after swing 2)

I like the freedom that double tapping gives you. In fact, I hardly macro any of my skills, because I feel you have more flexibility when everything is separate.
The only macro I've ever used is the backshot+wings macro on my outlaw, but even then backshot and wings each have their own individual keys set out on my keyboard as well.
Maybe it's just me. I like having more control over my character, and the double tap thing is something you get used to.
Unless their keyboard is stiff or not very responsive, then I'd understand their hostility towards it.

I use a controller with a D-Pad. Double Tapping is less of a simple option for me because of the way it handles it, but I have the Macro and non-Macro both keyed.

After using it when I had 5 points in it I wasnt going to max Combat Step...booster seemed a better choice...but I did end up Maxing Step and wow it is like a different skill when maxed compared to low lv of it. Glad I did max it.

Ah, yeah I don't use my keyboard with my Aran. I use this guy right here (modded the parts a little too, so the joystick has a nice feel for playing Aran). I can't use the keyboard with Aran, it feels like I'm about to get carpal tunnel from hitting the same damn button repeatedly.

You get used to it. I was like that on my gunner, and absolutely hated dash. "Why did I max this crap? It always throws me off, I don't even want to use it!"
But dash can be really useful for making a jump, or traveling.
It seems annoying at first, but you'll get used to having more control over double tap. Unless your keyboard hates you.

Dash doesn't throw you a screen or two to your left. Dash cancels out if you turn around/stand still.
Step fails to meet both of those.
And my keyboard does hate it. So does my computer.

Dash activated for me when I turned too quickly (Left then Right or vice-versa). If I had any amount of lag whatsoever it would delay me too, so if it was during certain times of server instability cough2xexpeventscough, it could potentially kill me if I got hit and tried to pot.
I don't have that issue with Step. It doesn't activate from hitting Left then Right, or vice-versa, and you don't have to space yourself like you do with an Outlaw to accidentally Dash. (As in tapping forward to move a smidge closer to your target when you're sniping or something.)

So in the end, what's decided? I'm about to reach level 29 and I want to know if I should add the points to combat step or booster...

I look at it this way: Omitting points in Step means losing potential gain from a skill, while omitting points in booster only makes it last 40 seconds shorter, but otherwise have the same effect. If you're really OCD about your booster, you could probably take some 2nd or 3rd job SP to it.
