Anime has such differing and far reaching styles these days that there is no set rules. I just say that anything American, similar to comic books, is not anime. Within there, there are American artists imitating the anime style of larger heads, bigger eyes, and the such. Anything that comes out of Japan is anime, but I really haven't found anything that resembles American art.

To be fair, I doubt anyone who hasn't read it on this site plans on reading it. Not that I agree with this crap either, but I doubt anyone would be into reading a VN here if they haven't tried one. They'd be too turned off by small things to actually get into the story.

A lot more western cartoons are more "colorful" than "anime" style. Western cartoons have stylized characters as well. There are tons of western cartoons with futuristic settings. There are tons of cartoons on Adult Swim with sexuality and violence.
