Base.wz is good for making sure all the other files behave. Oh, and it has important information regarding how to draw characters.

They need an entire file just to describe how characters are drawn...?

There's an assload of stuff for something as simple as drawing a character. This is a computer we're trying to tell what to do, and apparently it's not so easy. For example, when considering headgear and ANY hair, do we put part of the headgear underneath the hair or does it go over? Does the headgear cover the earrings? What does the headgear do to the hair itself?

I'll let you think about it =P

It's good for being corrupt and resulting in my redownloading of Maplestory after each patch.

Base.wz is only 7 KB... so unless mine is corrupted, that could fit in the client... (where I thought this was done)

Base.wz contains references to all of the other WZ files as subdirectories. It also contains StandardPDD.img (used in defense calculation), and various z-order mapping and sprite-order mapping files for references used in drawing characters and maps.

Used for drawings in maps...? I don't understand.

^I think it means something like "tile10213123.jpg goes in coordinate (x,y)."

Telling where the tiles and foot holds go is in map.wz
Telling the client how to display everything is what I'm interpreting Fiel's post as.

I think you've tried this but didn't copying a backed-up base.wz file from someone who's successfully patched help you patch? I used to back up my MS folder and C/P any file the patcher gets stuck at, it went smoothly. Besides, base.wz is very small in size, I'm sure a lot can offer help.

Except the z layering stuff for map tiles and objects is also handled by map.wz

I'm seeing no reference to mapping instructions for the environment whatsoever in base.wz. Unless I'm blind o.O

So, in really low terms, its like a phone book for all/most things used in game that is visual and a few others, which the game engine itself uses when collecting the data from the other WZ files? a-@

Rendering maps is impossible with map.wz itself, but I'm not sure on the details =/
