FORT HOOD, Texas An Army psychiatrist set to be shipped overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post Thursday, authorities said, a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded in the worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States.
The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded but alive in a hospital under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. He was shot four times, and was on a ventilator and unconscious, according to military officials. "I would say his death is not imminent," Cone said.
The man was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old from Virginia.
President Barack Obama called the shooting at the Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, "a horrific outburst of violence."
"It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas," the commander in chief said. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."
I just really don't understand this, especially since there's two sad ironies to this event. What has gotten into those soldiers? And what the hell's with the recent spate of mass-shootings?

Whats there not to understand? Some guy who should never have been allowed in the army because of his beliefs (he posted a blog post in which he said a terrorest bombing was the same thing as a US soilder jumping on a grenade to save fellow soilders) and then gave many many signs that should have gotten him thrown out without a second notice.
Im more shocked at the fact that this guy was allowed to get to major and was able to stay in service when he openly agreed with a recruitment shooting that happened earlier this year (i think, not sure when it happened 100%).

This was my thought as well. From what I recall talking to a military person in college, a Major purely by rank is in charge of 500 men. Given the US military's giant size, it was inevitable that something like this would happen, but by a frigging MAJOR?
I am glad he did not die during the attacks because then it would have gone according to HIS plan. Now, he'll stand trial, it'll be public, and he'll probably be slowly and painfully beaten to death in prison.

Actually, he was in the medical branch of the military, so Major i think is easier to obtain through it, and is required as well.
But that doesnt change the fact that he shouldnt have been in the military with his thoughts.

Yeah, he's a psychiatrist. A doctor. The Hippocratic Oath says, "first, do no harm," but in the world of terrorism it's more like "first, do tons of harm." Fuucking bastard.

Well, we have another reason to Remember, remember the 5th of November.
He was wearing a Guy Fawkes mask while he committed the shootings.

It depends. Medical officer =/= general officer. Medical officers are not in charge of as many people as a general officer.

Earlier today I was at the airport with my girlfriend, who was visiting me, and I took her back to the airport becuase she had to go back. We went around trying to find a place to sit, and we found an empty row of three seats in front of an Arabic airline's check-in place. There were people, (all of them arab and muslim,) checking in. This old woman and a really fat younger woman went to the one free seat next to us. My girlfriend and I got up and I told them both to sit down, offering them our seats. The younger woman looked at me, (I know I look pretty Jewish,) and seriously, if you could murder someone with a look in your eyes, that was what she was doing. All I did was offer her my seat. Then I came home and I see this on the news. The two things just connected literally a minute ago, and that's when I wrote this.
I'd say more, but Stereo would probably accuse me of more "racist polemic." Kigaz on this site is a good guy, but seriously, some of the people from his religion pineappleing scare me. The look that woman gave me was pure evil, and it scared me. And this wonderful army gentleman doesn't exactly detract from taht opinion.

Sorry, I don't buy it. I've seen plenty of angry people, there is anger, and then there is the stare of death. In college a guy bullied me for three months and then he beat up two of my friends and we all ended up in the police station and I was giving him this identical stare in front of the cops becuase I wanted to kill him with my bare hands and I did not give a $hit about the cops or anything else. That is the look this woman gave me for offering her my seat.

Better to attempt to at least make some light of a serious situation than anything else. I'm not one for somber moods, if I can attempt to find light in a situation I will.
Yeah, the whole thing is a tragedy, these shootings always are but because we have so damn many of these things you need to look for at least a little humor somewhere. Shooping Guy Fawks on November 5th for some reason made this a lot more rational and easy for me to deal with. If it's bad taste, then oh well.

I really hope they won't remember terrorist incidents by their dates other than 9/11. We're gonna lose track after a while, and this is not something society should lose track of.

I actually agree. While this is a very grave matter that is pretty jarring for the armed forces, that little bit of humor takes something unbelievable and irrational and somehow makes it real. It's an ultimate irony that things work this way, but that's the way it is.

"An Hero" is /b/tard for suicide.
