I don't recall 7 being sold with individual upgrade options.

They are being sold with upgrade options. Windows 7 Home Pro Upgrade is $120 USD, while the full OS is $200 USD. But silly Microsoft doesn't specify what warrants an upgrade.

Its possible to do so, but totally not recommended. I suggest buying the full version.

you need 2000/xp/vista installed beforehand if you want to upgrade to windows 7. check here for more info on it.

2000/XP cannot be upgraded to 7 directly. Only Vista and Windows 7 RC build 7233 and up can be upgraded. However, you can edit a certain file that allows the first RC build to be upgradeable.

i never said it could be. versions prior to vista will just need a full install, which i believe the upgrade disc will do.

IMHO, Pro is enough for mostly everyone's needs. The Windows games (If you REALLY need them) can easily be added without using the install disc.

Ultimate contains much garbage that isn't needed for most people.

As with every other software, commercial or free, it's better to uninstall and reinstall. A fresh/clean start is always recommended to avoid issues.

I haven't heard any problems with upgrading ubuntu systems.

We still have to see how well microsoft made the upgrade process, but what you say is still true regardless of how well they did it.

There's a way to install the upgrade version as "full" but you need to edit some files in the UG version =x

waste hiep, virtualization for windows xp sucks, can't even run games in it.

For upgrading to 7, a common problem is an endless reboot loop. I recommend researching this before upgrading to avoid it.
