The sniper is actually at the back of the building, and snipes everyone coming out. Because he's at the back of the building, he doesn't notice the pineapple props being thrown out of the front of the building, and promptly snipes everyone else that runs out of the back of the building.

I already have my arms retrieved from the file cabinet, and (inferred) had them equipped (impossible to build a fort without arms). I don't think the sniper's interested in a naked corpse. And everyone else ran out the back door, meaning it would still be open, and you'd still be a target.
