This happens occasionally for me, I tend to bottle things up a lot, and I break down occasionally because of it. I kindof worked myself up realizing I've done nothing even remotely noteworthy with my life, and I don't want to just...disappear if something were to happen to me.

well, honestly, I was thinking of the guy who voiced Mickey Mouse dying lately (I never saw this in the news, so it shocked the hell out of me when I found out today that he died a few months ago) and how much he'll be missed (and is), and the legacy he's left behind for kids and adults alike, the memories, the smiles...and I've done nothing. My closest friends are people I've never met and likely never will, I'm in an extremely large and dense city, yet feel completely alone, etc. It just hit me all at once that, chances are, nobody but my immediate family would really miss me if anything happened to me.[/COLOR]

I'm not worried that my family will forget me. My grandparents lost a son (my uncle) before I was even born and they still talk about him all the time, how proud they were of him, etc. I'm worried that I've done nothing important, that nothing I've done is worth space in someone's memory. I feel miserably alone lately, and to not be remembered or missed is the same thing to me, by extension. I can't think of anything I've done that people could say at a funeral "I can't picture what my life would've been like if Brandon was never in it."

And then 2 weeks later will have completely moved on and have their life be completely untouched by my abscence. I'm already more than a thousand miles from any family member or friend, the girl I care so deeply for that I've been unconsciously looking for her in anyone I meet is several hundred miles away, and I'm feeling completely isolated in a city full of people that don't even bother speaking English. I work with people at least 10 years older than me that I can't possibly hope to relate to, that have wifes, husbands, children, GRANDCHILDREN, homes, pets, nieces, nephews, that completely don't understand anything that's imporant in my life. I'm so lonely that I feel insignificant, like an ant crawling around in an parking lot full of termites. I can't relate, but I blend in just enough to go unnoticed.

Ok, dude, RELAX. Everybody has identical thoughts as you, many many times in their lives. Usually, the really big one comes when you're 30, have a job, family, and kids. You start doubting yourself -- "is this what I'll do with my life, is that all?" Most people buy a Corvette or something. Midlife crisis, man.

If you think about it, your lineage goes straight back to caveman times. If you were to go back like 100,000 years in time, there were people there that you can trace your roots to. More likely than not, if you have like 3 kids eventually, in 100,000 years in the future, they'll be right there. So, your personality and mentality is basically immortal; all you have to do is raise a good family.

Birth, reproduction, and death are the three fundamental points of human existence. Birth and death are a given, but all the courtships, all the relationship BS, everything, it all boils down to settling down with a spouse and raising kids. That's true immortality, and you don't need to be Barack Obama for that.

By the way, keep in mind that the discipline of history is composed mainly of wars and changes of political regimes. Basically, most people in history achieved "immortality" by killing a WHOLE LOT of people. There are more Genghis Khans than Albert Einsteins. So think about it, if you COULD "achieve immortality" that way, would you even want to? Relax, you're doing fine.
