So I was just looking at Jupiter

I've had a telescope for a long time but I haven't used it for quite a while now. I'm taking an astronomy course this semester so I decided to break it out today and have a look. I was able to zoom in and get a really nice clear look at Jupiter, and see all 4 of the Galilean Moons (which is really cool, because Europa is my favorite celestial body in the solar system.) The only other planet I have ever been able to see through it was Mars, and that was really cool too. It was several years ago when it was very close to earth, so I could see a lot of detail.

It looked sort of like that, but the moons were not tilted like that and I could clearly see clouds on Jupiter's surface.

Anyway, I was wondering does anyone else here have a telescope, or at least an interest in astronomy? Anyone seen any of the planets through a telescope?

(If you want to see Jupiter but don't have access to anything, you can see it very clearly with your naked eye right now. It's quite bright, and where I live it's just below the moon, so it's really easy to spot.)

I got really lucky, it happened to be on sale right around the time I graduated. It's pretty nice and I like using it, but prior to taking this class I just didn't have a proper understanding of how to look at things in the sky, which made trying to find things difficult and quite frustrating.

i remember going camping with my dad and him showing me the moon and its creators when i was very young i loved it, i have a telescope though like you have not used it in years though i have always been fascinated by space other planets ect. i have the deep field picture on my big gaming screen as my background

I'm taking an astronomy course right now, too.
I've always loved astronomy since I was a kid. I've seen jupiter, mars and venus (but faintly, venus is always on the horizon)

I'm taking an astronomy course in my school right now because I may be interested in doing something in that department in the future. The course is pretty free-styled right now since it's the first year being introduced. :/

My neighbour's an astronomy nut... I've seen Saturn through his telescope, which was pretty cool. You can see the rings and everything.

There's too much light pollution where I live, so I can't really do stargazing. Some nights I wish I could.

Saturn is probably the coolest one to look at. Even with a small telescope you can see a lot. Plus it will look different almost every time since the rings will be tilted toward/away from the earth at different angles throughout the year. I really want to try that one next, but I would probably have to go outside of town to find it easily.

same sitch here mate. id effing love to be able to lay out on my back lawn and just stare into the heavens.

I love watching the sky at night, its sad that i can't really watch too many stars thanks to the city lights, i would LOVE to have a telescope, but unless i got a job and some money, thats not happening ;o;

I love astronomy. 4th-8th grade I learned everything I could, and even bought a telescope. Heaven knows where that thing is now...But dang, I love the stars. The sky is amazing...

Just got back from my astronomy class's viewing session where we looked at Jupiter again (this time with the university's much more powerful telescope.) It was really cool tonight because, well, in addition to the 4 big moons being visible, there was also a very clearly defined shadow of a 5th moon visible on the surface of Jupiter. really, really cool.



I used to have Celestia but yeah, it's a little big lol.

I don't get it. How do you view Earth 5 billion years in the future? I can only go up to 2 billion years in the future.

That sounds freakin' awesome. That might be a really interesting elective to go along with my other classes.

I bet my love of astronomy and the universe will be totally smashed to pieces when I start taking my astrophysics classes, LOL. What a shame.

i'm also taking an astronomy course and man that stuff is interesting, too bad i dont have a telescope
did u know that u can see venus (kinda) clearly right now with ur naked eye too? it rise before the sun and it's the biggest and brightest star in the sky before sunrise
ps: interesting facts that i learned in astronomy that i wanna share
1/ global warming isn't entirely caused by human, there are a whole bunch of other factors as well, such as the sea (which gives off way more carbon dioxide than we do), precession (where the earth's tilt change) and such and such
2/ ASTROLOGY IS PHONY, the constellations are even wrong. i took a look at the ecliptic path and it turned out there's actually 13 constellations and ppl that were born in the very beginning and end of month might have their sign mixed up
3/ can't think of any right now XD
